Graduation Presents: More Gift Ideas for College Graduates

College class ring

Class rings aren't only for high school students. Since college class rings are rather costly, they make great graduation gifts. I knew several undergraduates who didn't buy a college class ring because they couldn't afford it. A few people who had them admitted that the rings were given as early graduation presents. If my mom hadn't bought mine, I doubt I would have gotten one. It has been four years now since I graduated, and I still appreciate my ring.

Electronics and computer software

Even if your upcoming graduate has a computer, they may not have the latest word processing or picture editing software. It's also quite possible that their antivirus and security programs will run out of date soon. If the computer can support it, an operating system upgrade is always a good choice as well.

Cell phones, digital cameras, and MP3 players are small items that are most likely to be damaged or broken. A replacement makes a great present.

A vacation

I've known plenty of students who received a trip as part of their graduation present. As an early present, my grandmother paid for my two cousins' European high school trip. Colleges also have overseas group trips, but students usually can't afford them on their own. If a group trip isn't an option, a cruise or a trip to the beach would also be a great present.

Pay a bill

On average it takes a college student up to six months to find a job after graduation. However, that statistic probably needs extending due to the economy. But the bills don't stop coming when you're unemployed. A nice graduation present would be to pay their first month's rent, car payment, car insurance, etc. On the same note, cable or satellite dish installation is also an excellent choice.

Prepaid credit card

We all know that prepaid cards make great presents. When graduation comes around, don't exclude the idea because they are sometimes considered impersonal. Prepaid credit cards can be used for necessities such as food and gas. They make great gifts for college graduates.

Furniture

If the student stayed on campus for all four years, they probably don't have much, if any, furniture. Starting out on your own can be hard when you have limited income and need everything for your new home. Anything from household items such as a set of dishes up to a bedroom suit can be a welcome present.

Clothing

Receiving clothes has often been joked as being the item least wanted as a gift. However, the clothes someone wears in college is generally not the same that they would wear to work. Some new clothes and accessories would be a welcome present.
