Grain Mill Review, Retsel Mil-Rite

For serious home grain milling Retsel Mil-Rite is the best of the best. Retsel specializes in grain mills, and the Mil-Rite, a remarkably well built machine, is it's grain mill intended for household use. This is a heavy, sturdy machine with large stone grinding wheels that can grind almost any grain. The Mil-Rite runs at 1/4 horsepower, 43 RPM and is available in domestic or international voltage. It will run you a few hundred or more, but it has a 10 year partial guarantee and you won't find any mill comparable to the Retsel Mil-Rite. The Mil-Rite is so well structured that it will no doubt last many years.

The stone burrs can be set to any level from very fine to coarse. After the initial run though with a cup of wheat or rice, any grit is gone and the flour will turn out clean. Stone mill grinding is a far healthier form of grain grinding as the flour does not get heated or pasty and the vitamins are retained. Grinding and baking the whole grain will create the healthiest bread and will spoil you for any other inferior breads. The Retsel Mil-Rite creates flour from grain in minutes and the bread can then be made with the freshest flour possible.

With the Retsel Mil-Rite you can grind wheat, rye, rice, oats(whole oats), spelt, amaranth and whatever other grain you want to turn into flour. You can make fine flour for soft breads or coarse flour for heavier country style breads. A three quart removable hopper is included with the Mil-Rite which will accommodate a good amount of grain so it need not be constantly refilled. If you forget to turn off the mill, not to worry, the wheels will disengage when the grinding is over and no harm will be done to the machine. The grain mill weighs about 35 lb.s so it will stay where you put it, it won't bounce around the table during milling as so many other mills will.

One exceptional quality of the Retsel Mil-Rite grain mill is it's quietness. Despite it's power and bulk, this is possibly the quietest home flour mill that you will ever find. Home flour mills are notoriously noisy which turns some people off from buying a mill. This is not an issue with the Mil-Rite, the little noise it makes is highly tolerable and will not reverberate through the house. If you are serious enough about baking fresh wholesome breads then you will likely be using the Retsel grain mill often and will appreciate it's quiet function.

The Retsel Mil-Rite is now available in several colors which gives it more kitchen appeal. It won't look industrial in the kitchen and will fit in with other appliances. Since the mill is heavy, it will probably be on a counter in view much of the time so the color choice is important. There's no problem storing the machine in a strong cabinet but if it is used often it will be easier to keep it out on a counter or chef table.

The Retsel Mil-Rite home grain grinder can be cranked by hand if necessary. The wrench used for cranking is an optional purchase which may be useful to those in remote areas who experience power outages.

Although the Retsel mill is quiet, I would disagree on how well it works (about 10% of advertised speed - see comparisons on youtube of the mill-master and mill-rite). I found with my flour that the mill master had about a 25C degree rise, just slightly less than the impact mills. The company is near impossible to deal with if you have service issues.
