Grains of Sand

A Poem of Loss and Longing

Candida Bohnne-Eittreim

Your lives slip through my trembling fingers

like grains of sand

leaving me alone in the prairie of desertion

where arctic winds howl an aggrieved discontent

over the empty land

of my haunted soul.

Tear-blind eyes seek you

wondering at this cruel game of now I see you, now you're gone

that takes you so far away

to places I must not go.

Will you be there

at games end.. found at last?

When finally your hiding place is revealed?

Smiles filled with the love

death so cruelly snatched away

leaving the one who loves you all ,

alone…

seeking always for home
