Grammy Awards Go to the Birds with Cee Lo Green, Lady Gaga, and Katy Perry

Some of the most memorable moments of the 2011Grammy Awards involved birds. So how did artists like Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Cee Lo Green get all avian at the awards show?

Well, Lady Gaga's eggcellent performance started on the red carpet at the Grammy Awards, as she stayed in an egg "incubating" before her performance. The whole egg thing was obviously related to her song "Born This Way", as the artist was "born" onstage, cracking her alien-like egg and breaking into her Madonna-esque song. She and her dancers were wearing blah egg-yolkish outfits that could have also been the remnants of amniotic sacs, and the dancing, props, and theatrics also weren't quite up to par when it comes to what we're used to seeing from Lady Gaga. To liven things up a bit, it would have been awesome for Kanye West to interrupt her performance by saying, "Omelette you finish, but my 'Runaway' video featured the best bird-related performance art of all time." You can see her performance here.

Artist Cee Lo Green seemed to come from the same land as Kanye West's phoenix, as he donned a colorful feather tail to perform with a band of muppets and Gwyneth Paltrow. He also wore an armor vest over his rainbow-colored turkey/peacock outfit (maybe he was afraid Sarah Palin or Ted Nugent was in the crowd?). You can check out one of the best performances of the night here.

Katy Perry also donned feathers on the red carpet, wearing a pair of white wings with her sparkly ensemble (although she looked more like a short Victoria's Secret angel than a bird; here's a photo). The songbird also got airborne for her Grammy Awards performance, sitting on a swing high above the crowd while footage of her wedding was projected on a giant sheet behind her.

Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine also went for a bird-related outfit, but her classy white gown showed Bjork how to wear swans the right way (here's a photo).

But songbird Christina Aguilera, who joined Florence Welch for a soaring performance that paid tribute to Aretha Franklin, almost became a victim of the "flockalypse" when she tripped on stage. Had she gone down, she would have really been in trouble; after all, there was a crazy leopard with Bride of Frankenstein hair lurking around (Nicki Minaj, as seen here), and that fire behind Drake and Rihanna when they were onstage would have been perfect for roasting.

Sadly, the Mileybird species wasn't spotted at the Grammy Awards, but she could claim to be responsible for this new trend involving our feathered friends. I hope Grammy fans enjoyed their bird-watching this year; don't miss the Grammy Awards next year to see what species is in style.
