Grammy Night a Big Hit

Sunday evening, the 49th Annual Grammy Awards lit up television screens all over the country with outstanding performances by star studded celebrities such as Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, Mary J. Blige, and The Dixie Chicks. The theme of the show combined the melodies and legacies of older artists with the contemporary influx of new artists and genres of music. Musical collaborations made for an interesting show at this year's Grammys. The Police reunited after over twenty years of separation and excited the crowd by opening the award show with the song "Roxanne."

A few of the performers were also Grammy winners.

The Dixie Chicks proved that being reprimanded for publicly expressing their opinions on issues relating to America's leader could not stop them from freely speaking their minds through song. The group commanded the stage singing "Not Ready to Make Nice," a rebellious song that won two awards, including song of the year. The trio made very elated but poignant acceptance speeches, many of which were directed towards the people who helped them work and be creative through a rough time when the world gave them the cold shoulder.

John Mayer, a talented new artist walked away with Pop vocal award for his highly acclaimed album "Continuum." Mayer, along with R&B singer John Legend and Corinne Bailey Rae perform a unique medley that showcased their melodious voices and extraordinary talents.

Mary J. Blige was one of everyone's favorite winner Sunday night, with an award for the best R&B album "The Breakthrough" and the best R&B song "Be Without You." Blige found herself in tears, joyful of the changes that she has made in her life all around - musically and personally.

Talent also entertained in the form of new artists Chris Brown and American Idol winner Carrie Underwood. Underwood took home two Grammy awards, showing that the Idol show was only the beginning.

A big highlight of Sunday night's Grammy award show was the duet between Justin Timberlake and "My Grammy Moment" contest winner Robyn Troupe, an 18-year old from Houston, Texas. The Recording Academy sponsored a contest that would give one lucky singer the opportunity to shine on Grammy night with Timberlake. Three singers were chosen as finalist but viewers of the show could vote (via Internet or text messaging) for one person to be chosen to get on stage. Troupe demonstrated that she could hold her own with Timberlake, helping him and rapper T.I. in the song "My Love."

Sunday night's 49TH Grammy Award show was a glorious celebration showing that music is timeless.
