Grand Canyon Quarter Launch

The Grand Canyon quarter launch will start on Tuesday, September 21 at 1:30 PM Mountain Standard Time. Many will be joining the United States Mint and the National Park Service for the public release of the Grand Canyon quarter.

Where is the Grand Canyon Quarter Launch?

The ceremony happens on the scenic South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park in between Verkamp's Visitor Center and Hopi House. Parking lots to use include the one in the Backcountry Information Center and the Grand Canyon Visitor Center. The free park shuttle takes visitors to the stop where parking is very limited.

What Happens After the Grand Canyon Quarter Launch Ceremony?

After the ceremony, children 18 and younger score a free Grand Canyon National Park quarter. Adults can exchange cash for $10 rolls of the beautiful new quarter. Those who can't make it to the Grand Canyon can watch the ceremony live on the web starting at 1:25 PM MST on americathebeautifulquarters.gov.

Public Coin Forum on September 20, 2010

Just a day before the Grand Canyon Launch there will be a public Coin Forum at Grand Canyon National Park. Third Age reports the forum is to be hosted by US Mint Director Ed Moy for the public to express views about future coinage while learning about current Mint programs. The forum happens at the base of El Tovar Hill on September 20 at 5 PM MST.

Grand Canyon Facts

The Grand Canyon was carved by the Colorado River and is located in Arizona. One of the first national parks in the US was the Grand Canyon National Park. According to Wikipedia, the floor elevation is approximately 2,600 feet with a long-axis length of 277 miles and width of 4 to 18 miles. In 1540, the first European views the Grand Canyon - Garcia Lopez de Cardenas from Spain. In 2010, America celebrates one of its most scenic sites with the Grand Canyon quarter launch.

The America the Beautiful Quarters Program

The Grand Canyon quarter launch is part of the American the Beautiful Quarters Program. Each year the public sees fives new national sites shown the tail side of American the Beautiful Quarters. The 12-year initiative was authorized by Public Law 110-456.
