GRANDMA KNEW

Kathryn Neff Perry
My grandmother used to tell me that my life would never be dull. I never understood her insight, until recently.
She used to laugh at the things I would say and the things I would do.
I wonder if Grandma knew that I would have a son who would try to store a "dead animal" in the freezer.
One evening while enjoying the solitude of an otherwise explosive environment, black smoke came billowing out of the wood burner, filling the entire house with smoke. It resembled smog in Los Angeles. We could have hung meat in any room of the house to be cured.
Maybe she knew that I would one day I would have a cat who carries dog food all over the house. She bats it around on the floor and then eventually drops it in someones shoe, as its final resting place.
The most fun of all is watching my husband squirm every year. He can never remember our anniversary or my birthday. They are only two days apart. So every year at the beginning of the week I start getting cards. The kids and I take bets to see which I'll get first, a birthday card or an anniversary card.
