My Grandma Rolfe was a legend in the kitchen. She passed away more than ten years ago, but every time I make these Christmas cookies, I picture her looking over my shoulder, making sure I don't forget the cream of tartar. It's a good feeling.

Ingredients

3 cups flour
1 large cup large cup Crisco
1 cup sugar
2 large eggs
2 level teaspoons cream of tartar
1 teaspoon bakind soda
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon salt
Directions for Grandma Rolfe's Christmas Sugar Cookies
1
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.2
In a large bowl, sift together flour, cream of tartar, soda and salt. Cut in Crisco with a pastry blender, until pieces are pea-sized.3
In a separate bowl, beat two large eggs well. Add sugar and vanilla, and beat until light yellow and foamy. That's important!4
Add flour mixture, and mix well. Roll out on to a floured board about 1/4 inch thick, and cut with your favorite cookie cutters.5
Bake at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes.Tip
I never understood how much exactly Grandma meant by "a large cup of Crisco," but I always use one of those pre-measured Crisco sticks and my cookies come out fine.
