Grandma's Heirloom Recipes

Denise White
My Grandmother passed away in 2001. I thought passing on some of her recipes and remedies would be a great tribute to her. So that being said I will begin.

If you had a cold and cough Grandma would make you her cough syrup. This syrup really seemed to work better than anything you bought over the counter. My son had a lot of croup until he was about 6 yrs. old and this syrup seemed to be the only thing that would help him.

Grandma's Cough Syrup for Croup

1 c. honey
1/2 c. Lemon juice
1/4 c. whiskey

Boil this slowly to a syrup. Administer 1 tsp. every 10 minutes until cough relaxes.

Yes this recipe has alcohol in it but the alcohol boils away.

Grandma's Remedy

If you have a sliver or something stuck in your skin. You can also use this on area's that seem to be infected. Grandma would make you a polis which is a small piece of bread dipped in milk or cream, then sprinkled with a little sugar and put it on a piece of gauze, and then taped to the area. Leave it for 12 to 24 hours. If it is a sliver it should be real easy to remove. Apply a little pressure and it should pop out. This polis will draw infection out as well. My son was 4 yrs. old and stepped on a Mexican Sand bur. The bur part broke off deep in his heel and we tried everything to get it out. Before he went to bed I made one of these polis's and put on his heel. The next morning I applied a little pressure to each side of where the bur was and it popped right out. This remedy has been used in our family for years.

Grandma was an awesome cook. She could take next to nothing and make something awesome to eat. Every Holiday Grandma always made homemade ice cream. That was never enough for her you had to have the toppings to go with it.

Grandma's Hot Fudge Sauce

2 squares (2oz) semi-sweet chocolate
2 Tbsp. butter
1/3 c. water
1/4 c. corn syrup
1 c. sugar
1/8 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla extract
6 oz. semi-sweet chocolate chips

Put the 2 squares of chocolate, butter and water in a heavy sauce pan. Stir over low heat until the chocolate has melted. Do not let the mixture get to hot or the chocolate will seperate. Stir in the corn syrup, sugar and salt. Continue cooking over low heat for 10 minutes until shiny and smooth. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla. Stir in chocolate pieces and stir till melted.

Caramel Sauce

1 c. sugar
3 Tbsp. water
1 c. heavy cream
2 Tbsp. sweet, butter
1 tsp. Vanilla extract

Put the sugar and water into a heavy sauce pan. Cook uncovered over low heat for about 10 minutes until light brown and caramel syrup has formed. Do not stir the sugar as it is melting. With the utmost caution and an oven mitt over your hand, as the syrup will be very hot, pour in the heavy cream very slowly. The syrup will attempt to hurl itself from the pan, so you must be careful. Stir in the butter. Simmer for another 10 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla.

Butterscotch Sauce

1 pound (21/2 c.) light brown sugar
6 Tbsp. butter
1 c. heavy cream
1/4 tsp. salt
2 tsp. vanilla

Combine sugar, butter, cream and salt in a heavy sauce pan. Place over low heat for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally until sauce is thick and golden. Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla.

By all means DO NOT THINK OF YOUR DIET when you try these recipes. They are awesome sauces and we always looked forward to Holiday's and Grandma bringing the ice cream and sauces. We all gained about 50 pounds.
