Grandma's Pineapple Tarts by Frito-Lay - Product Review

Grandma Lost Her Touch with This One

Annette Robbins
On a recent visit to Dollar General with my husband to happily spend the Dollar General gift certificate that he won in a recent sweepstakes, my husband's eye was drawn to a display of Grandma's Pineapple Tarts manufactured by Frito-Lay. The colorful yellow and cream colored box with the word "New" printed on the front of the box with a likeness of a bespectacled grandmother benignly smiling at you seemed to beckon my husband to its display. In one fell swoop the box of Grandma's Pineapple Tarts landed in our shopping cart.

Product Description
Grandma's Pineapple Tarts contain a baked tart that is perfectly formed with scalloped edges. Inside the center of the tart is the pineapple filling. There is an expiration date clearly printed on the box and the description plainly states the product contains wheat, coconut, pecans, egg and soy ingredients which is important information for food allergy sufferers.

Flavor
In my opinion, the pineapple tart filling was lacking in taste and I was disappointed that the distinct pineapple flavor was not present. I would be hard pressed to state that the flavor is pineapple if it were not listed on the box. Perhaps the artificial pineapple flavoring is too artificial and overpowers the natural pineapple flavor. The tart was perfectly formed and tasted fine. The overall presentation of the product met my expectation.

Packaging
The packaging of Grandma's Pineapple Tarts by Frito-Lay is attractively packaged in shaded yellow hues with brown, red and blue lettering. The box itself is very sturdy-much sturdier than most packaged cookie boxes. In fact, the box is sturdy enough to be recycled as a gift box when colorfully wrapped and decorated. The product is manufactured in Mexico. A good feature of Grandma's Pineapple Tarts is the 24 cookies are packaged in foil with 6 cookies packed in 4 sealed foil packs. The total net weight of the box is 11.8 ounces. The freshness of the product is maintained with the detailed packaging.

Nutrition
The nutrition facts panel notes the cholesterol content is 5 mg with a sodium content of 75 mg. Contained calories are 120 g and the total fat content is 4.5 g with no transfat. The panel lists pineapple jam but it is not discernible to my taste buds. The flavor of the pineapple filling is non-descript in my opinion.

Cost
The cost of the 11.8 ounce package of Grandma's Pineapple Tarts by Frito Lay was expensive for my pocketbook. I believe the durable packaging and foil enclosed cookies with its appealing packaging accounts for the high price. The $2.85 cost of the 11.8 ounce box of Grandma's Pineapple Tarts is more than I will ever pay again.

In summary, Grandma's Pineapple Tarts manufactured by Frito-Lay, Inc. is pleasingly packaged and the foil wrap keeps the product fresh. Perhaps Grandma's other baked products will fill the bill but Grandma's Pineapple Tarts left much to be desired in flavor.

Congrats on the sweepstakes! (It is always fun to hear from the winners.) I haven't seen these cookies, but it sounds like that is a good thing.
