Grandmother

See Her Both from Without and Within

A Powers
She's such a plump little child.

She wears her mother's dresses

that wrinkle about the sleeves and collar.

Her eyes sparkle with a mossback kind of innocence.

She laughs and cries like everyone, but seems a bit set off.

And I wonder how she was when the pies she made were muddy.

She can tell you of the times she saw and the tears she couldn't bear to cry,

and still you know nothing about her.

Perhaps it is the child within me that grapples for a link,

and perhaps it is the adult in me that overlooks it.

But she hides there in her mother's clothes,

distant from me and yet elegantly loving.

Although I can't really stake claim,

I wish I could keep her.
