Bravo to Coker Elementary School on their successful week set aside to honor grandparents by allowing them to have a special day with their special grandchild. I was not only delighted, but surprised when my 11-year-old granddaughter called and asked me to attend a luncheon with her at school during grandparents week. She asked with such enthusiasm and hope that I could not turn her down. I do not get to spend as much time with her as I would like and this made it easy for us to have a special date together, just the two of us.

As I walked into the lobby of the school, I noticed many other grandparents with smiles on their faces. They were just as proud as I was to be there. For most grandparents it has been several years since you were in school, and the atmosphere can be somewhat intimidating. You may be afraid you'lll get lost and cannot find the cafeteria, the hallways seem endless trying to locate a classroom. There are fourth grade hallways, fifth grade hallways, hallways for this and hallways for that. But, I was immediately put to ease and all my intimidations were quickly extinguished.

The sign up tabe was located immediately in front of the double doors entering the endless supply of hallways. As I bent over to sign up, I heard this eager voice ask, "Who are you here to see?" When I looked up, I saw an excited eleven year old boy with pretty brown eyes and a smile that indicated he was there to help, and he was not only excited to be a help, he was eager. I gave him my granddaughters name and he knew exactly who I was there to visit and exactly where to find her. He left and I waited at the door for him to return with my granddaughter.

She came to meet me and timidly walked me through the endless supply of hallways to the cafeteria. We placed our orders and took our trays. We entered a room that was filled with rows and rows of tables, what looked to be about two hundred kids talking at the tops of their lungs, and I thought this was going to be the longest lunch hour of my life! But, to my surprise, she led me through the room and down the hall to another room. She called this room the QUIET room and explained that it was set up especially for this occassion.

The QUIET room was beautifully decorated. We had a very nice lunch together that neither of us will ever forget, thanks to Coker Elementary School.
