When I was younger, Grandparent's Day, started in 1978, seemed like just another Hallmark gimmick; another one of those "gotta get the family together and give something" holidays to sell cards. It wasn't until my grandma who raised us died that I realized what an impact she made on my life. I also realized what a sacrifice she made in her own life to take care of her grandchildren.

I also have a greater appreciation for multiple generations of families living together and caring for one another after the Gulf Coast Oil Spill. I cannot imagine having a life where three or four generations before me built the life for me that I always call home. God Bless the people of the Gulf Coast as they spend many years trying to make the best of their home, their family, and their love of their lands and waters.
