Granite Countertops 101

Eric Brennan

Granite countertops are easily one of the most sought after countertops in bathrooms and kitchens around the globe. But unless you've experienced a granite countertop installation and know a thing or two about the material, then you might be in for a surprise. Because granite is such a durable surface, it is often thought of as a permeable and easy to install material. In fact, granite can easily fracture and break if it is mishandled or installed. That's why the cost of granite countertops can sometimes be expensive.

Layout and Measuring

There are several important points that must be considered before buying any granite countertop:

  • · The Shape- Shape severely affects the price of the granite countertop. It can easily exceed your budget when shapes create too many cuts, angles and sharp corners.
  • · The Thickness- Nominal thickness of a sturdy granite countertop is three centimeters. Some thinner granite countertops cost less and are supported by a composite surface like plywood or fiberglass.
  • · The Material- Depending upon where the material was mined from, how far it must be shipped and the quality of the stone all adds or subtracts the value of granite countertops.
  • · Cutouts- The placement of sinks, electrical outlets and other in counter penetrations, are one of the most costly processes of granite countertop installation.

Estimates

Estimates may require a bit of work to be done before an installer can begin. Cabinets must first be designed and measurements must be taken. More often than not, a computer aided draft (CAD) program is used to create a detailed schematic of the granite countertop. This is used to verify dimensions with the homeowner and the granite countertop supplier. Once all drawings and details are approved, work can begin on cutting the countertop. A granite countertop installer may need to create a paper template of the existing countertop prior to installation.

Experience

Never consider hiring any granite countertop installer unless they provide you with at least three contactable references. And once you get those references, always make a phone call or visit the reference yourself. This way, you can be certain your granite countertop installer has the experience to get your job done right.

Many granite countertop suppliers and installers have a good portfolio that proves their past work is up to your standards. A good portfolio not only proves their work is good, but it can also help you with ideas and details about your granite countertop you may not have thought of on your own.
