Gran's Crocheted Snowflakes

Mary Martin

Found in her sewing box,

Crumpled like old spiders,

These little string balls

Waited to be discovered.

Gran made Christmas ornaments

For family, friends and others.

They were freely given each year

A treasure to be shared.

Over the years many trees were decorated

With one, two or many more

Handmade ornaments

Which didn't come from a store.

No matter the number that each tree may hold

Each one is special

A memory it releases

As on the tree it is hung.

Gran's smile, a quip or story I'm sure

Was shared as the gift

Of each ornament was delivered

Hand to hand.

This year those little string balls found in her box

Became beautiful snowflakes.

Each one a bit different like the real ones they copy.

Maybe Gran was tired; a bit large or maybe she watched a mystery; a bit small.

Each snowflake is unique.

like the life she led.

"Do as I say; not as I do",

she oftentimes said.

These snowflake ornaments,

A gift to be shared,

Speak loud and clear

How much she cared.
