The gold rush of 1862 is a great place to start learning about the history of Oregon. Here at the Gant County Historical Museum you can trace the miners and the settlers through stories and the items needed for the hardships of life in this time era. See amazing rocks, gems, fossils, clothing, mining artifacts and even the renowned poet Joaquin Millers cabin. Visit the Greenhorn jail and many other exhibits that will bring history alive.

The Dewitt Museum will teach you about Sumpter Valley's famous Sumpter Valley Railway. This railway was finished I 1910 and ran from Baker City to Prairie City Oregon. At the Prairie City Depot visitors can see what the old days on the train were really like. The Dewitt Museum and Prairie City Depot are on the National Register of historic Places. There is also an RV park for the over night visitor and there is a museum reconstructed with period rooms, artifacts, and geologic specimens.

The Grant County Ranch and Rodeo Museum share the legacy of American cowboys with the visitors to this great museum. See cowboys of the past and present and check out the saddles and tack from days of old. This museum chronicles the lifestyle of the Oregon cowboy through the best and worst of their lives in John Day Country.
