Grant Money as a Three Step Process

You might be interested in getting money to support your work effort, maybe your company needs an influx of money to provide research, it's available. Maybe your company needs an influx of cash to sponsor expansion that private banks are willing to back, grant money may be an answer with additional funds for the expansion while lowering the risk. While it has the flavor of a race where you can bet for free, don't get deceived about the nature of accountability and granting sources, while it's true that in most instances grant monies aren't required to be paid back, it is also equally true that grant funds must be tracked and accounted for under the applicable 501 [c] 3 laws, or other laws as they might apply. Don't let that daunting sounding sentence put you off; it's not anything that a reasonably intelligent person such as yourself can't handle. This article, however, will also give you some hints about that.

The economic times we are in are particularly fertile for grants having to do with the Department of Housing and Urban Development, abbreviated as HUD. HUD has money for upgrades to real estate, money for occupancy for real estate, and money available to individual home owners to improve them. Such funds are nice to latch onto and can be very useful when it comes to improving your property. As always part of the mystery is where to look and what to look for, and that's where someone who does grants can be very useful, they can help you find what you need, however, remember to be fair to them when it comes to paying for their knowledge. Treat a HUD consultant right and they can be worth loads of good money to you, but as with anyone else, treat a consultant like a distant cousin and they will probably respond to you in kind. So point one- remember that money is the name of the grant game and consultants know where it is.

Certain types of grants are particularly friendly to you, grant money is not normally allocated for start up businesses, so if someone is telling you that you can fund a business which doesn't yet exist off a grant; try it, but tread light, they may be right, but more often than not, they won't be. What you can do is create a track record for your business in a way that most aren't familiar with. So part one of the process is know your consultant and what you are seeking grant funding for. A second part of the process is; knowing how to use your finances to benefit you overall, knowledge which is worth getting in touch with professionals about, and we will be happy to help anyone who lets us know they'd like us to.

Step three of the process involves the actual putting together of the grant packet. Folks who have not been trained to do grants can try this, but they will likely find it very frustrating to work with. There are many exacting demands for information, certain styles of putting that information forth, and ways to make sure the truth about your organization isn't displayed in the wrong way. That is where a properly trained grant writer can not only come in handy, but they can prevent so much frustration on the behalf of you who want the funds. How to be certain that someone is trained is merely a matter of examining the seminars, training and records of past grants which they have written. Bear in mind, competitive grant writing is as much about putting them together and getting them out there as it is about anything else, so if someone you know has put together grant packages, but they haven't received money from them, don't let that be a flag to you, the money is awarded to those who present the best narrative based packages, when the timing is correct. Don't be afraid to trust someone, and even, advance them a stipend to help them get the job done. Remember, every professional, and grant writers are professionals, needs to receive monetary support for their craft. When you can help them, do so, they will be far more likely to help you in return. Step three is working with a person or persons who has done grant packages previously and is trained to understand what is needed.

One additional item to consider involves a readiness to put the funds into application, and this calls for a flexible plan design. So often a great plan will work wonderfully in the first quarter of the year, yet, that same plan in the second or third quarter of the year will need some revising. Again this is where knowledge of the process and planning the process come into play- if you know planning; this calls for being able to constructively design a slag line, or stretch point, into the base. If you don't know how to do this sort of planning, our first suggestion is to be certain that you are dealing with someone who knows how to build these sorts of plans.
