Grants for African Americans

Carl Evangelista
The educational opportunities for African Americans, in the past, had been few and far between. This has nothing to do with desire or intellectual ability, but rather financial inability. The funding available in the forms of scholarships and grants open to African American students was largely non-existent as opposed to the plentiful opportunities open to Caucasian students. Numerous small changes have taken place, though, over a large amount of years, that has leveled the educational "playing field".

There are many organizations that provide specific scholarships and grants for African American students; one familiar name is the United Negro College Fund, Inc (UNCF). Established in 1944, the UNCF administers financial aid provided by various organizations and companies, as well as some through the government, for scholars. They also provide funding to 900 educational institutions; the institutions allot this funding to various programs to further help students indirectly through the UNCF.

Following the maxim "A Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Waste", the UNCF is dedicated to furthering the education of African American people. There are too many to list here, but following the link above will take you to a listing of many financial aid opportunities; these opportunities range from general scholarships to very specific fields of specialization to numerous contests and awards.

Along with scholarships and grants, the UNCF also funds other special programs such as various internships, fellowships, and mentoring programs. They provide financial support to approximately 60,000 students each year who attend both UNCF Member colleges as well as non-member colleges. Initially formed in order to reduce the disparity between education for African Americans and non-African Americans, the UNCF does not discriminate; they firmly believe in higher education for all Americans, and therefore the scholarships they administer are open to all.

When armed with education, there is very little a person cannot accomplish and achieve. With thanks to the financial aid available through various programs and grants, the road to education has become a little less bumpy, and more equally accessible by all travelers.
