Grants for Asians

Carl Evangelista
Considering the large area of various grants, and considering the percentage of the Asian population in the U.S., it is only natural that there are grants that are targeted solely for Asian students. Aside from general grants and scholarships, there are also many that are aimed at the education of Asians who want to pursue a path in the arts.

Three such organizations that offer such grant programs are the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA), the Asian Cultural Council (ACC), and the Urban Artist Initiative of New York City.

The AAJA offers three different grants, each of which is aimed at those looking to, or working in, the area of broadcast or newspaper journalism. The Internship Grant for Broadcasting is awarded to one person per year who is working as an intern at a radio or TV network, to help defray the cost of transportation and living expenses. Individuals working at an online or in print news organization may qualify for the AAJA/Chicago Tribune Print and New Media Internship Grant. The Stanford Chen Internship Grant is awarded to 3 individuals interning at either a broadcasting station, or a small to medium sized newspaper.

The grants from the ACC are aimed toward those in the field of visual or performing arts in various ways. To apply for this financial assistance a letter must first be submitted to determine if the particular activity falls within the guidelines of the funding.

The Urban Artist Initiative of NYC is funded by the New York Foundation for the Arts and is available to any person of color, such as people of Asian descent, that are residents of New York City. The grants are for artists in the field of performing, visual, or literary arts.

Asian students can also qualify for the Gates Memorial Scholar program that is administered through the United Negro College Fund (UNCF).

This is just a small sampling of the financial aid available to Asian Americans who are either pursuing or already working in the realm of artistry. More information can be found at College Scholarships as well the sites for each of the organizations.
