Grants and Awards for Teachers - Hurry Time is Running Out

Gerald McLeod
There is never enough money available to provide our young people with a quality education. When ever there is budget cuts planned, education funding seems to always be high on the list. Already the State of Hawaii has reduced K-12 instructional time to four days per week, for the remainder of this school year, due to statewide budgetary short falls. Teachers and school administrators must search out supplemental educational funding sources wherever they can be found to thwart these type of attacks.

Here are some Grants and Awards Teachers and school administrators can apply for to provide additional funding and educational resources for their classroom and school needs. But you have to act fast, these Grant and Award opportunity deadlines are right around the corner.

Exemplars In Science sponsored by the NSTA and the Ciba Foundation, provides a $4,000 money award and a trip to attend the NSTA's National Conference, for teachers who demonstrate exemplary creativity, improved instruction, and stimulated interest in science within their class room. One Middle school teacher and one high school teacher will be honored. More information can be obtained at nsta.org/about/awards.aspx. The deadline is November 30, 2009.

The Maitland P. Simmons Memorial Award support for new Science Teachers provides selected K-12 teachers who are in their first five years of teaching with mentoring and opportunities for involvement with NSTA activities. Go to NSTA's web site at www.nsta.org/about/awards.aspx for your application. The deadline is also November 30, 2009.

The Vernier Technology Awards recognize teachers for their innovative use of data collection technology using computers, graphing calculators, or other handhelds in the science classroom. Six K-12 teachers will be awarded $1,000 in cash and $1,000 in Vernier products for their winning entry. How do you collect data and win? You can gather the details about this award at www.vernier.com/grants/nsta.html. The deadline is November 30, 2009.

Build a Bear Workshop Bear - Hugs Foundation has literacy and education grants for summer teaching, early childhood education and special needs literacy programs. The Bear Hugs Foundation will provide grants ranging in amounts of $1,000 to $10,000 for program submissions in these areas. The average award amount is in the $1,500 range. Visit their web site at www.buildabear.com/aboutus/community for more information. The deadline is November 30, 2009.

NSTA's web site (www.nsta.org/) is an excellent resource for information and application on other grants and awards available which teachers and school administrators can apply for. Teachers and school administrators should definitely add this funding resource to their list.
