Grants for Single Moms

Carl Evangelista
Single moms face many obstacles that are not experienced by mothers with partners. In many cases they must deal with the reality of "going it alone"; receiving little or no help, either emotionally or financially, from the father or even their own families. There are organizations a single mom can turn to, though, to receive financial help with some of the basic necessities.

Two of the more material concerns, those which moms place highest in importance factor, is food in their children's stomachs, and a roof over their children's head. Each of these issues is addressed in the form of programs, funded by government grants, through agencies such as U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Women, Infant's, and Children Program (WIC).

The rental assistance department of HUD offers a few programs in order to help single mothers find affordable housing. HUD helps apartment owners by subsidizing them in order to offer reduced rents to low income families. HUD also provides for public housing, apartments which, again, offer reduced rent for low income families. There is also a Housing of Choice Voucher Program (Section 8) that allows the mom to find her choice of house and use the voucher to pay for the entire rent, or a portion thereof. This rental assistance link will guide you to the proper page of HUD in order to gain further information on these programs as well as other concerns regarding housing. It also contains links to other programs that may exist in your local area.

When it comes to getting help feeding their children, single moms can find aid from such grant programs as WIC. Though only children under 5 qualify for this program, it is an excellent resource for ensuring that children are not deprived of the nutrition they so highly require at a young age to ensure proper development of their bodies and their brains. Providing a variety of food items from infant formula to quality nutrient rich foods, WIC follows through on their mission to safeguard the health of women, infants, and children under 5 through nutritional means.

Thus, again, while the money from government grants does not flow through the hands of the single mother requiring assistance...the money does enable programs for her to find the help she needs.
