In order to test the Indian River diet for my five days on a diet experiment, I purchased the Ultra Slimming Indian River Ruby Red Grapefruit Juice from Publix Grocery Store. Then I read their guide for how to lose 19 pounds in 13 weeks. Unfortunately, their diet appears to be a low-fat diet and I typically strive for a moderate-fat diet.
The Indian River website includes a 7 Day Eating plan with 1,200 calorie sample meals that consider the "pyramid plan," and offer specific food choices that includes, of course, the Indian River grapefruit juice. I don't typically follow a low-calorie diet either, especially since I'm doing the Insanity Workout.
Although I'm not an advocate of the low-fat or low-calorie diet, I am a fan of Ruby Red Grapefruit Juice. It's refreshing. It makes my protein shakes such as Almased taste better.
Here are some things you need to know about the grapefruit juice diet:
No. 1: You can make low-calorie sparkling drinks with the grapefruit juice: I enjoyed drinking the Ultra Slimming Ruby Red Grapefruit Juice diet - and even created my own grapefruit cocktails. I recommend mixing the grapefruit juice with Zevia lemon lime soda or the Hansen Blue Sky free lemon lime flavor for a sweet-and-sour flavor. The natural sodas are both sweetened with Truvia or Stevia, which is from a plant. Or mix the Ultra Slimming grapefruit juice with seltzer water and a small amount of your favorite alcohol.
No. 2: The Grapefruit Juice Diet suggests five meals a day: breakfast, lunch, snack, dinner, and another snack. I believe that's ideal for most people - although I tend to follow the Reverse Diet way of thinking with a heartier breakfast and smaller dinner.
No. 3: Here's a sample of the Grapefruit Juice Diet's 1,200 calorie meal plan for one day: For breakfast, 2 frozen waffles, 8 ounces of grapefruit juice; 1 cup mixed berries and hot tea; Lunch is one 8-inch flour tortilla with 1 1/2 ounce shredded low fat cheese, 1/2 cup salsa; 1/2 cup calorie-free gelatin and a calorie-free beverage. Snack is a quarter of a melon. Dinner is 2 boiled red pot with spray margarine; 4 ounces grilled fish, 1 cup asparagus, 1 cup calorie free gelatin; snack is 1 cup fat free, sugar-free pudding,
No. 4: Here's a sample of what I did for one of the five days on the Grapefruit Juice Diet: For breakfast, I made gluten-free blueberry pancakes with real maple syrup, 8 ounce of grapefruit juice and one egg. For lunch I had a sprouted grain tortilla (heated up on the stove with olive oil) with turkey, vegetables and Havarti Cheese. For a snack, I had yogurt. For dinner I had vegetable soup with chicken and a small salad. For the evening snack, I skipped Ben & Jerry's Dulce Delish but treated myself to one Dove chocolate.
No. 5: An 8-ounce serving size of the Ultra Slimming Indian River Ruby Red Grapefruit Juice, which is not from concentrate, has 90 calories, no fat, 23 grams of sugar, 3 grams of fiber, Vitamin C, Calcium, Potassium, Omega-3 from fish oil.
No. 6: Ultra Slimming Indian River Ruby Red Grapefruit Juice contains 100 percent Florida grapefruit juice, which is important to me as a Floridian.
But as a dieter, the question remains, "Would you really lose 19 pounds in 13 weeks following the Grapefruit Juice Diet?"
Honestly, there is no way of knowing whether I lost weight because of drinking Ultra Slimming Indian River Ruby Red Grapefruit or because I was doing the Insanity Workout.
On the plus side, I did find the Indian River Ruby Red Grapefruit Juice decreased my appetite, which is a major accomplishment for someone doing the Insanity Workout. I recommend drinking the Ultra Slimming grapefruit juice, but I would skip their specific 1,200 calorie meal plan. The items on the menu are not appetizing in my opinion.
Bottom line: Thumbs up for drinking Ultra Slimming Indian River Ruby Red Grapefruit Juice once a day.
Thumbs down for the low-calorie Indian River Ruby Red Grapefruit Juice diet suggested meal plan.
Instead, challenge yourself with higher-intensity exercise and use the grapefruit between your ears. Maybe the grapefruit has magical powers after all!
