Graphic Novel Review: RETURN to WONDERLAND

Kevin L. Powers
What would happen if after Alice left Wonderland she grew uo, had a family, and then slowly went insane? This is the premise from which the Grimm Fairy Tales series Return To Wonderland is derived. Alice has grown up and has a teenage daughter Callie who will be forced to enter the world of Wonderland, a dangerous place where all manner of dark and demented creatures live. Through the looking glass Callie will venture in order to discover the true horror that her mother lived through once before but is it by accident or fate that Callie finds herself in Wonderland?

This is not Walt Disney's Wonderland as Zenescope series like all the other Grimm Fairy Tales titles have gone back to the original source material for their dark and demented tales. This title is not for young children as it is both sexy and horrifying at the same time. Written by Raven Gregory with artwork by Rich Bonk and Daniel Leister., this series pulls no punches and is all the better for it.

In addition to traveling to the wicked world of Wonderland where she can trust no one, Callie must also contend with a brother, who is a serial killer in the making she must also deal with a suicidal mother unable to cope with the reality and the memories of her own trip to Wonderland.

This dark and demented series is but one in the growing trend of horror themed comics currently populating store shelves but this is definitely one of the better ones, especially for a horror fans. The artwork is a perfect match for the story and a testament to the quality of books put out by Zenoscope. Whether you're a fan of the original story or just a fan of great horror, Return to Wonderland is a series worth picking up. This is just the first part of a trilogy, so there Is definitely more to look forward to from this series.
