Graphic Novel Review: ZOMBIES VS ROBOTS ADVENTURE

Kevin L. Powers

In the future there will be a zombie apocalypse and to help combat the zombie threat man builds robots. After that, life kind of gets complicated and nothing is ever the same. This is the world of the remarkably different Zombies Vs Robots as created by Ashley Wood and Chris Ryall. The graphic novel Zombie Vs. Robots Adventures collects the complete series (by the same name) but unlike the original series this is a collection of random stories to give readers a deeper understanding of the world under which Wood & Ryall have crafted.

Ryall is on hand to craft all the stories but Wood is nowhere to be found to contribute art this time around. Instead the art in the stories is handled by Menton3 (in the story "KAMPF"), Paul McCaffrey (in the story "Masques") and Gabriel Hernandez (in "Zuvembie Vs. Robots"). In "KAMPF" a Sergeant in the military must contend with the knowledge that his son has been used in an experiment to create the perfect human-robot hybrid for the betterment of humankind to battle the ever growing zombie threat. In "Masques" a simple janitor comes across the plans for the ultimate robot defender. He uses simple service 'bots to help him build the robot in the plans as he soon discovers that his destiny is more than being a simple janitor. In the final story "Zuvembies Vs Robots" a voodoo witch doctor decides to create a zombie army of his own to combat the zombie apocalypse. The results are not always the best thing.

Each story is uniquely different from the other and the use of different artistic styles is a benefit to the series as a whole. They open the world and universe to many different possibilities. Zombies have become very popular in our pop culture and any new interpretation is always welcomed. Ryall and Wood have created a unique and different perspective and this series just shows the possibilities of what can be done in future series and stories and that the zombie genre still has a few original ideas left.
