Gratitudes

A Poem of Gratitude

Brendan W Vittum
I fear I think too much. Recently I received a comment about making a gratitude list that made me smile faintly - as well as remind me that sometimes the way in which we are perceived is purely an interpretation of the words we speak or write - nothing more. Lest you think me all gloom and doom, here then is a bit of gratitude.

Gratitudes:

On most occasions
I
would not write a
note like
this.

Not
unless gathered at
my aunt's on
a certain holiday;

An exercise
in thanks.

I
do not not do
such things for a
lack of thanks;

Gratitude;

nor is it
apathy, rather an awareness
of all goodness
does not require an
accounting.

Still -

For a friend -

I am very thankful indeed
for the gas that just
boiled
the water to make my bath hot.

My belly is content with
the same gas which
baked the chicken
fingers
I now consume.

I do not rue
the Lovers
lost, or a father's dislike
for his sons;

They give me the
pain
that takes form in my
words.

I could continue,
the razor that shaved
a days itching away,
the roof that keeps me dry
and the window which shuts
the snow out tonight.

The server that whistles
anesthetically
in the corner,
and the ISP
who graciously waits
one more week to
be paid.

There is more
than
I will ever safely,
publicly,
privately,
admit to being

Grateful for.

But most thank
full am I for
you who reads this
ditty
tonight.
