Gravity Wings: Free-Verse Poem

Christian Poem of Praise

J. Ellen Fedder
Have you ever flown in an airplane above a truly spectacular view? This free-verse poem describes the concept of gravity from the perspective of an airplane traveler. The final verse concludes with a tribute to the One who created the spectacular view.

A river winds and twists
round rocky crags and granite cliffs,
looping, curving, curling--
a great blue length of ribbon,
racing gravity from snow-capped peaks
to ocean's edge.

Dividing lift and drag,
I fly in metal wings on high,
spying it etching furrows
in earth's brown skin.

An eagle, my swift companion
glides fair skies beyond my windowpane,
potent, practiced, keen--
his hollow quills and feathered wings
defy gravity, unseen but by me.

Captured by God's creative beauty,
my soul erupts in praise--
flying gravity-free,
weightlessly worshipping
beneath the shadow of His wing.
