Mexican food is a tasty and delicious if it is authentic. Rhode Island is a great place for authentic Mexican restaurants that are not chain and are deliciously authentic. If you live in Rhode Island or plan on visiting and love Mexican you have to check out these three favorites.

Tortilla Flats Restaurant, Providence, RI

Tortilla Flats is not only a great authentic restaurant, but it is also in a great part of Providence. Located on Hope Street on the East Side, Tortilla Flats is a favorite of Brown University and RISD students. Named after John Steinbeck's, "Tortilla Flat" book, this restaurant is located in an old firehouse.

The seats are not comfortable and it is small, but most importantly the food and drinks t an Italian name are delicious. Sangria and Margarita's are a great compliment to the delicious fajitas, tacos, enchiladas and burritos not to mention many other intricate dishes such as the Sidewinder, Habenero Mac & Cheese or Louisiana Alligator to name a few. Mexican with a Cajun and Southwestern compliment, Tortilla Flats is inexpensive and delicious. Do not forget fried ice cream for desert!

Don Jose Tequilas, Providence, RI

Ironically located on Atwells Ave in Historic Federal Hill, which is known for its great Italian food, Don Jose Tequilas sticks out like sore thumb without an Italian name. It is however one of the most well-known and loved Mexican restaurants in Rhode Island.

From the Nachos Machos to the fajitas, there is sure to be something for Mexican food lovers. The Chimichanga Burrito and Enchiladas are sure to get your mouth watering. Don Jose Tequilas is also open for brunch on Sunday's from 11-2:30pm.

El Azteca, East Providence, RI

El Azteca is located nearby to downtown in East Providence, RI. This place is always hopping with people. The food is authentic and delicious. The homemade tortilla chips and salsa fill you up before you even order. The spinach and cheese quesadilla is my favorite, however the fajitas are mouth-watering and the chicken tacos divine.

Sangria and Margaritas flow here and it is a local favorite for lunches and dinner. Hard to find a parking spot, Azteca is inexpensive and the staff is exceptionally friendly and service is perfect.

Cancun Mexican Restaurant, Johnston, RI

Cancun is located in an obscure place on Putnam Pike in Johnston but seems to have quite a following. The restaurant has a bar that leaves a lot to be desired but the food makes up for it.

Their fajita tacos are excellent and the seafood filled Pacifico Chimichanga's are unique and have quite the following along with the Cancun burrito. The fried ice cream here is excellent with a great strawberry sauce and chocolate.

So despite being known for seafood and Italian restaurants, Rhode Island is also home to some delicious and authentic Mexican. Buen apetito!
