Great Book Series' for Beginning Readers

Shepherd
Getting beginning readers interested in chapter books is an integral part of establishing a love for reading. Here are a few good series for early readers:

Junie B. Jones- This is a fantastically funny series that both boys and girls love. It is the adventures of a girl through kindergarten and first grade and her trials and tribulations- including her fussy baby brother, playground politics with her friends and enemies, and her relationship with her stuffed animals.

The Little House series- These are perennial favorites, and now there is a new series for young readers based on the original books. The Little House Chapter Books series adapts several stories into collections around a theme, such as Laura and her dog, and going to school. There are also a few new series about Laura's ancestors- going all the way back to an ancestor in Scotland.

Horrible Harry- This is a series about an enthusiastic school boy and his many adventures and misunderstandings. It is a cute series with a lot of imaginative story lines.

First Flight Early Readers- This is a staggered series of chapter books with numbered reading levels. Levels 1 and 2 are for early readers who still need a little help reading. They are all entertaining stories about children and animals, with simple language and lots of colorful pictures.

Scholastic's Step Into Reading- This is another numbered series, with the 1 and 2 numbered books being for the early readers who may need help. This series has the advantage of being tied into many of the cartoons that kids already enjoy, such as Arthur, Thomas the Tank Engine, and the Berenstein Bears.

Amelia Bedelia- This is a humor series about a housekeeper who takes her instructions a little too literally. It is readable by early readers, and at the same time illustrates the differences between words that sound the same but have very different meanings.

The New Curious George Adventures- This is a new series that updates the old series a bit, and is a lot of fun to read. The classic monkey's antics have not been diluted any, he is still curious and still gets into a lot of trouble.

Madeline- The Madeline series is almost as old as the Little House series, but it has lost none of its charm. The title character is brave in the face of all dangers, and always knows how to be a good friend. The social skills taught in these books are unparalleled in many newer series, and they always have a good lesson to teach in an entertaining way.

New series are started every year, and some just don't end up being memorable. These however, have already made an impact on young readers, and should remain memorable for many years.
