Great Books for Six Year Old Girls

Christie Silvers
We all know that reading is important to children of all ages. Each child has their own interests and likes. Most of the time a little girl's idea of a good book is greatly different from a boy's idea of a good book. Since I only have daughters, I know nothing about what boys like. Therefore, here is my list of great books for six year old girls.

Junie B. Jones- This is my six year old daughter's favorite book set. She loves any and all of the Junie B. Jones books. With titles like "Junie B. Jones and the Stupid, Smelly Bus" and "Junie B., First Grader: Jingle Bells, Batman Smells" what six year old wouldn't like Junie B.? She's quite the girl. She will tell you like it is and not sugar coat a thing. Don't expect these books to have perfect grammar or show excellent decision-making since they are suppose to be written by a little girl. I think that's why the kids like these books so much. The Junie B. Jones books were written by Barbara Park and Denise Brunkus.

Amelia Bedelia- Amelia is a very interesting character. She is a funny housekeeper who never quite understands the instructions that her employers leave for her. Children and adults, alike, love these books. Amelia is funny and she make my six year old girl laugh out loud. These books are classics and will always be funny. Amelia Bedelia books were written by Peggy Parish.

Rainbow Magic- The Rainbow Magic books are my six year old girl's second favorite books. These books are each about a different fairy, which is also a different color of the rainbow. Each book focuses on this one fairy and the world around her. For example, "Ruby the Red Fairy", "Sunny the Yellow Fairy" and "Heather the Violet Fairy". Even my ten year old daughter enjoys these books. These books were written by Daisy Meadows and Georgie Ripper. There are also books by these same authors called Weather Fairies. These focus on fairies like "Crystal the Snow Fairy" and Summer the Vacation Fairy".

My Secret Unicorn- This is another book set that appeals to six year old girls. There are several books in this series, just like the books above. Each book focuses on a particular unicorn and their world. The book "My Secret Unicorn Flying High" is about a girl and her pony, Twilight. Twilight can turn into a unicorn when the girl says the magic words but she has to keep that information a secret. These books were written by Linda Chapman and are definitely a great read for any girl, not just the six year olds.

Pixie Tricks- Ah, yes, the Pixie Tricks books. These books are a favorite of not only my six year old girl's but of mine too. These books are similar to the Rainbow Magic books, where each book is about a different magical creature. Unlike the Rainbow Magic books, which only focus on fairies, the Pixie Tricks books are about all kinds of different magical creatures; sprites, goblins, gremlins, elves, wizards and dwarves . The Pixie Tricks books were written by Tracey West.

Madeline- Any of the Madeline books are perfect for six year old girls. The stories are about a very mischevious little girl, from France, who enjoys exploring and learning about new things. Of course, she always has a story to tell. My daughter loves these books and can never get enough of Madeline. Madeline is a classic character, that definitely stands the test of time. The older Madeline books were written by Ludwig Bemelmans.

While these are only a few of the great books for six year old girls, they are the ones that my six year old girl loves. She loves to read and I love to hear her read. Reading is such an important skill that all children should love using. Read, read, read.....it's how the world communicates.

My son loves the Junie B Jones books, and Amelia Bedelia. We haven't read the others on your list, but I'm certain if they are as good as Junie B & Amelia Bedelia, he would enjoy them as well. This article is good reading recommendations for 6 year olds -- not just girls.
