Great Breakfast Choices If You Have Hypoglycemia or Low Blood Sugar Problems

Start Your Day Right

Sabrina Young
If you have ever suffered from the effects of low blood sugar, you are very familiar with that gnawing hungry feeling in your stomach (even if you just ate an hour ago!), the irritability, the shakiness and confusion, and the frustration of not knowing what you can and cannot eat.

Most likely, if you suffer from hypoglycemia or blood sugar problems, you have had stick to a strict diet regime, eating a small meal every few hours. Each small meal needs to have a combination of a complex carbohydrate and protein (or fat). Additionally, you have to watch your calorie intake, since eating several meals a day can easily add up to hundreds of unnecessary calories.

Here are some excellent breakfast and early morning snack food options if you suffer from hypoglycemia. They have a mix of complex carbs (such as whole wheat toast or bran flakes) and low fat proteins.

Spanish Omelet Breakfast, a la carte.

I usually cook up an omelet with two or three Omega-3 eggs (or egg whites), use low fat cheese, and top with homemade salsa.

Low Sugar Raisin Bran with Soy milk (or skim milk)

The bran in the cereal serves as an excellent carbohydrate. Most sufferers of hypoglycemia are also lactose intolerant. I can only drink about four ounces of skim milk at a time. This simple breakfast is what I eat almost every morning, and it keeps me energized for several hours.

Small Banana with Peanut Butter

A large banana has a lot of sugar, but smaller bananas, or half a banana, with a dollop of peanut butter provides me with a quick boost mid morning. Other ideas can include eating a sliced apple or pear with peanut butter.

Whole Wheat or Multigrain Toast with Low Fat Cream Cheese

The darker the bread, the easier it is for your body to handle. Read the whole wheat bread labels, and opt for breads that are high in fiber, low in sugar, and have a short list of ingredients. If possible, buy your whole wheat bread fresh from the bakery or make some at home. You want to incorporate food that is a complex carbohydrate in your diet.

Single Slice Peanut Butter and Honey Sandwich

Another quick snack that will boost your blood sugar, prevent the negative effects of hypoglycemia, and keep you going for a few more hours. I usually only put a spoonful of honey on the whole wheat bread. You can opt to skip the honey or substitute other options, like a small spoon of sugar free jam or jelly, half a banana, cream cheese, or even bacon bits.

Breakfast Burrito

Whole wheat tortilla, salsa, low fat cheese, and a small amount of chicken make for a tex-me breakfast treat is high i complex carbohydrate, protein, and fiber.

A Handful of Unsalted Walnuts

While this protein snack will not prevent a hypoglycemia blood sugar crash that has already started, it can help keep your blood sugar levels steady until you can have a more substantial meal.

Sunny Side Up Eggs with One Slice of Whole Wheat Toast

I use zero calorie cooking spray or extra virgin olive oil when I treat myself to some fried Omega-3 eggs and whole wheat toast. I only eat this breakfast once a week. Remember, the more meals in your diet, the less calories each meal must have. If you suffer from hypoglycemia, you must always think about your overall caloric intake.

Whole Wheat or Multigrain Bagel with Cream Cheese or Peanut Butter

Another quick breakfast or morning snack that will help your blood sugar stay level if you suffer from hypoglycemia. I usually have half a whole wheat bagel at a time.

As you can see, there is an ongoing theme here of protein (Omega 3 eggs, peanut butter, low fat cheese) and a complex whole wheat or multigrain carbohydrate (toast, bagel, bran flakes). While there may not be a lot of variety, these meals have the right combination of protein and complex carbohydrate to keep me feeling good. Notice the obvious breakfast items that are missing - juice, coffee, donuts, and pastries. Those breakfast items will leave you feeling dizzy once your body begins to process the food and refined high sugar carbohydrate.

Hypoglycemia may limit your breakfast options, but there are hundreds of other breakfast items that you can enjoy once you find the right combination of complex carbohydrate and proteins to start out your day.
