Great Britain Hands National Sovereignty Over to European Union
News You Won't Hear in the News: UK Citizens Are Denied a Chance to Vote
It was common knowledge that the UK would join the European Union eventually, but the people didn't know it would happen under these circumstances, with so much at stake.
What does the Treaty of Lisbon mean to Great Britain?
The Treaty of Lisbon calls for a permanent European Union president (each president will serve two and a half years and will be chosen by all of Europe's leaders). A foreign minister, to be appointed by Brussels, and a diplomatic service, will not be subject to or acountable to Parliament, the electorate, or the British crown. Nor would foreign policy be subject to a British national veto.
In the last national election, Brits voted for members of every party who claimed they would try to once again stop the Treaty of Lisbon from rearing its head. Apparently, however, only the Tory party has still voted against it.
Conservatives claim that the signing of this Treaty, by new Prime Minister Gordon Brown last year, restricts Britain's power to control its borders and immigration, and takes away its own control over fighting terrorism and crime on home soil. Great Britain will be subject to foreign laws on energy, employment, and many other issues. If all appeals fail, this Treaty will become law in January of 2009.
The vote, 311 to 248, denied the ability for the Conservatives to put forth an amendment allowing the people a chance to speak. Many feel that the UK's power to self-govern will be completely void.
The Daily Mail News online, seeing the writing on the wall one day before the vote, called this "Kremlin politics at Westminster". According to LifeSiteNews.com,John Redwood, a senior Tory and political theorist, writes, "...an out of touch government continues its battle against the British people and their liberties...The visceral hatred of democracy and liberty emanating from the government is now nauseating."
What could this mean to the U.S.?
The forming of the European Union was one of the first steps taken toward a one-world government, which even President George W. Bush has talked about. If the U.S. should follow in Great Britain's footsteps, our own National Sovereignty could succumb to the rules, laws and governing authority of the United Nations.
