Great Christmas Decorations Your Kids Can Make at Home

Kevin Nurmi
If you have ever been around a child during the holidays, you know that they adore Christmas time. They always want to help you put your decorations up around the house and in the yard. They love going to get the Christmas tree, and then putting the ornaments on it. Of course, their favorite part is probably opening all of those gifts from Santa on Christmas morning. If that describes your children, you may want to think about doing some of the following at home decorations with them, to make their holiday even better.

Nearly every family will gather around the main Christmas decoration at one time or another: The Christmas Tree. The tree is often decorated with colored bulbs, lights, and other hanging ornaments. One great decoration your child could make is their very own Christmas tree ornament. Take some glue and Popsicle sticks and glue the sticks together in a shape. You can make a star, a square, or any other shape you want. You can then decorate the shapes with anything you want. Add glitter, beads, colored paper, or even a picture to add a personal touch. You can use these ornaments on your own tree, or give them to a family member for a special Christmas gift.

Other then Christmas trees, the next most popular decoration is probably wall hangings, pictures and signs. They often contain small phrases or Christmas messages along with a picture of something to do with the holiday. It would be very simple for your children to make the Christmas decorations like these on their own. You probably have all of the materials you need in order to make the decorations. After your children create their own works of art you can display them anywhere in the house. The fridge, walls, or even over the top of non Christmas pictures are all great places to put your children's decorations. This is a great project for any age.

You may want to allow your children to make a centerpiece for your dining room table. You could even use their home made center piece for that big Christmas dinner. Your kids can make a beautiful centerpiece out of fake flowers and a vase that you purchase. Allow your child to decorate the vase if it is possible. Or, for a more kid oriented centerpiece you can take two old TV Guides or thick magazines and fold all of the pages towards the center in the same direction. Once you are all done, you can staple two together and paint them green for a nice Christmas tree centerpiece. Either craft will be sure to add a much needed family touch to your Christmas table.

There are a lot of crafts that children can do during the holiday to help decorate your home. These are just a few of the more general Christmas decorations that are easy and fun for you and your children. You can find more ideas online or in a magazine, or even buy a book full of ideas, and let your children choose which ones they like best. No matter what project you decide to try with your children, it will be a great experience for everyone involved. It will make them happy to know that they can express themselves creatively and have it appreciated by all of the Christmas guests when it is displayed around the house. So go ahead and give your children a chance to show just how much they love Christmas time, and get them involved in making their own Christmas decorations.
