Great Christmas Gift Ideas for Colleagues

Todd Pheifer
Buying Christmas gifts for colleagues may seem like a fairly simple task, but it can be a difficult decision for some people. On the one hand, people want to get something for their colleague that is meaningful and has some value. However, there is always the issue of "professionalism" and sometimes expectations regarding appropriate workplace behavior can limit the types of gifts that are given to co-workers. Still, that doesn't mean that people have to be afraid to give particular gifts during the holiday season. Here are a few ideas on great Christmas gifts for colleagues.

Gift cards

The gift card has become a standard gift in a variety of settings as it gives the receiver some level of freedom in terms of purchasing what they want. A gift card may not be the most personal or the most interesting, but it is a way for the person to get a gift without having to figure out a gift for a co-worker that they may not know. There are many different gift cards that can be purchased. These include coffee houses, juice bars, restaurants, and retailers. In addition, the denomination of these gift cards can be relatively affordable and in many cases can be purchased for as little as $5.

Food

Purchasing food is another standard office gift because it is a generic gift and a typical part of holiday celebrations. Granted, sometimes food is not necessarily the best gift because people will buy very standard food items that are popular in terms of retailers but not necessarily enjoyed by the consumer. For example, the standard box of cookies may be fine, but it may join several other boxes of cookies that are already at home. In addition, it may be best in certain situations to not perpetuate a society that consumes large quantities of food. Also, giving alcohol should be approached with some caution, as the workplace may not be the place to exchange alcohol or encourage drinking during the holidays.

Books

Despite the technological advancements of society, people still read books. Therefore, a best seller may be a good gift to give, particularly if it is a fun book and generally regarded as popular. Buyers may need to stay away from political books or other topics that may polarize an office setting. Sometimes going to a major wholesale store like Costco and Sams Club can be a good resource for this type of gift because there are a lot of themed books at affordable prices. Granted, sometimes people don't necessarily know the reading tastes of their colleagues, but oftentimes there are books that can be purchased that are general enough to apply to a variety of people.

Personality

Finally, there are certainly times when people can buy gifts for colleagues that are unique to that person. This can include personal interests, hobbies, and items that are specifically requested by the individual. Again, people can get a personal gift for an individual but they should make sure that it is not too "personal", as this can be viewed as unprofessional. Of course, this can be a gray area so it is often best to be more conservative if people are uncertain about how to proceed. Happy shopping!
