Great College Towns to Retire In

Amy Stepp
Everyone dreams about the day the will retire. We all know that once those days roll around we will be so happy knowing that those working shoes will (hopefully) never be graced again. The only thing we tend to not think about is where we are going to retire to. If you have not thought about it then let me tell you about some great college towns that you may want to retire to once you no longer have to punch the time clock. I will first explore the Northern lifestyle in Ann Arbor, Michigan and then take a completely different turn down South to Oxford, Mississippi!

Ann Arbor, Michigan
Ann Arbor, Michigan is a thrilling college town that has a ever lasting events of things to do in the community. With just a little over 115,000 in the population count, this town is mainly known for the University of Michigan. Even with the big University dominating the city of Ann Arbor, the other part of the town is still kept very small. The city has very strict zoning laws that make progressive chain building scarce when it comes to Ann Arbor. The main claim to fame this town has to do is all the sporting event parties going on year round, however the big one is the college football season when the Wolverines take on many wonderful teams in their conference especially their biggest rival OSU (Ohio State University).

Some people will tell you that the only draw back to living in Ann Arbor, Michigan is the cold temperatures in the winter. The average temperature in January is around 21 degrees, however the plus side to the cold winters with the massive amounts of snow, is the wonderfully seasoned Spring and Summer temperatures averaging out around 80 degrees in the mid summer months. Just picture it right now, walking down the river-walk next to the famous Huron River on a breezy summer evening with your love holding your hand and the smell of the water grazing your senses. No worries about sweating because with such comfortably cool summer nights you will never break a sweat!

OK, still not convinced, well let me tell you about their housing situations. Of course if you are retiring to the lovely city of Ann Arbor, you may want to purchase a 19th or 20th century style home to choose from, or if you you are more into a modern taste on the outskirts of town you will find more ranch style homes. Either way the average cost of a home in Ann Arbor will run you only around $180,000. Now if you are more on a budget and understandably so considering you are now going to be on a fixed income, then look into the colleges University Commons area. The University Commons area is a planned community that houses 55 plus year old who have gone to the University of Michigan or is currently attending the University of Michigan. To read more about this great facility click on over to www.universitycommons.org for more information on this retirement community.

There is so many more wonderful things to say about Ann Arbor, Michigan and if I had the time I would love to share all my knowledge and personal experience in this town with you, however we all know time is cut short these days so I would love for you to click on over to www.topretirements.com and type in Ann Arbor, Michigan for more excellent information on this great retirement college town.

Oxford, Mississippi
Alright, I took you far North into Michigan for a great college town, now it is time to flip the coin and get in touch with our Southern roots with this vibrant and historical college town of Oxford, Mississippi! Home to the Old Miss Rebels this college town is a great place to retire because the activities throughout Oxford exceed far more then those Saturday football games. William Faulkner made Oxford his home for many years and in most of his books he writes about the local scenes and homes which are opened for tour. Another great author known as John Grisham also has a home in Oxford. Those are only a couple famous names associated with Oxford Mississippi. Along with the rich, historical homes and plantations popping up all around Oxford will soon feel the need to break out your parasol and talk with a deep southern accent. Now, of course I said there is more to do in this town then hit up the local college sports scene but in reality The University of Mississippi is home to one of the best SEC (South Eastern Conference) team there is. The tradition in the Old Miss Rebels football team is so deep that most people who love this college football team treat a Saturday home game like their church outings. The play book is their bible and the chants and team songs are their hymns! The SEC has a great fan base and I am sure once you have visited one game for the Old Miss Rebels you will be hooked as well.

So what are some of the draw backs you may ask and their isn't many. Some people do tend to complain about the hot and humid summer days with temperatures reaching in the 90's during mid-summer, however the positive to that is the winter months in Oxford are cool and manageable. No need to worry about your long, heavy winter coat in this town. Another draw back will be spelling out the name when you have to fill things out. Just remember the song for Mississippi when spelling it, M-I double s I double s I double p I and you will be just fine!

The housing market will be the same here in Oxford as in Ann Arbor. The price for a newer home in Oxford, Mississippi will cost you around $182,000 however that was the average price and there are a lot of cheaper home in the area that are still great to retire into. If you are looking into getting a condo instead of a home then you will probably only pay around $100,000.

Named by USA Today, Oxford, Mississippi has been named one of the top 6 college towns in the nation. No wonder why with all the beauty this small town holds. Only around 13,000 people have truly found the secret. Click on over again to www.topretirements.com and type in Oxford, Mississippi for more information on this amazing city!
