Great Dane = Great Dog!

My breed profile today is going to be about Great Danes. This breed of dog is very large, and can be incredibly intimidating. Hopefully my post today will be very informative to you! Enjoy!!

Physical Description:

Height: 30-34 inches

Weight: 120-200 pounds

Life Expectancy: On average under 10 years (due to their size), but they are able to live up to 13 years

The Great Dane is a very large dog known for it's nobility and strength. The coat of a Great Dane is always short, thick hair that will not get very long. Their color is varied and includes: fawn, black, brindle, or a mix of black and white.

Personality:

You might think when first seeing a Great Dane that they are aggressive dogs and you may even be intimidated by them. But, they are really gentle giants! This breed is loving, playful, and surprisingly patient with children. This is a great family dog but be sure you spend lots of time training him as a puppy or he will be out of control as an adult. He is also incredibly loyal and brave and would make an excellent guard dog.

Exercise:

Due to the size of the Great Dane, they require lots of exercise. Their daily walk needs to be very long to drain their energy.

Living Requirements:

Again, due to the size of the Great Dane, they are best suited for a house with a large backyard. I strongly advise against having a Great Dane in an apartment there will not be enough room for the dog to move around comfortably!!

Common Health Issues:

It seems repetitive but.....due to the size of this breed, they are prone to hip dysplasia, which usually develops later in life. Great Danes are also prone to bloat, heart disease, and tumors. Taking your dog to the vet frequently will help prevent health problems, so be sure to do so!!
