At age twenty-five I looked into the chance to restart my education with high hopes. Having moved around the country several times, entered a few different degree programs, and became a single mother I happened across CSN. The Community College of Southern Nevada was my place to focus on an effort at attaining my first 2 year degree. The current acting president is Micheal Richards. Decided to follow a Communications program, and excited about a new experience, three years ago I registered for classes here. Waiting and prioritizing my most important objectives, I finally began the courses in 2009.

With three campus locations and eleven learning centers to choose from in and out of the city, including one in Henderson, I knew I needed to be an on line student. This new trend is popping up nation wide. Their distance education curriculum allows a student to attend classes over the Internet and correspond to the instructor and other students. Best of all the campuses are equipped with computer labs and libraries to assist in study time. This school first opened in 1971 with only 400 students. Now over 40,000 people are enrolling each semester for classes. Less than eighty percent of that number go on to graduation.

When I first sought out this college I was given information from counselors to focus on my interests. Additionally, I had no funds to pay for learning; a finical aid counselor also gave me easy to follow directions to file for grants and loans through the government. Student Support Services directing me into the on site testing center to qualify my level of comprehension in all the basic subjects needed. Finally I was on my way to make my own schedule of classes. Lastly, the bookstore is inside of the same building and I could accomplish all of theses tasks in one day.

One thing I immediately noticed was the culture and diversity of CSN. The Cheyenne Campus, located on 3200 E. Cheyenne in North Las Vegas, holds a Planetarium, Performing Arts theater, Police Academy, Day Care Center, and restaurant from which Culinary students serve their homework. Associates Degrees are offered in Arts, Business, Science, General Studies and Applied Science. Certificates are earned for either completion or achievement. Each field of specific study has a demonstration area, such as the music majors are housed in the building with the theater and so on. Sports are not yet a fully developed format here. While volunteer teams form, it is only for fun.

Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities presents the authentic seal of approval for CSN to present their graduates with degrees. Along with membership to Phi Theta Kappa honors society, an invitation only club, this local school provides participation in professionalism and consideration of guiding leadership to students of all ages. If uncertain on pursuing lifelong goals to get ahead, do in touch with the nearest community college in your city. Since Las Vegas became my home, I found I could gain so much from the time I put towards studying.
