Great Expectations Film Review

A Review of the 1998 Movie Version of Great Expectations

Angela Colley
Fans of the classic Dicken's novel, Great Expectations, will love this American adapted film version. The painfully twisted look at relationships that made this novel famous are beautifully modernized, and set to a background of detailed scenery. Even if you haven't read this book there is something in this movie for you.

The plot is as it always was, the story of two unlikely childhood friends. Except now, it's modern times in America. Alfonso Cuaron's vision leaves no holes in the plot by modernizing the story. It is still just as compelling, heart wrenching and provoking as it was when Dicken's wrote it.

The scenery is gorgeously detailed. Every room Finn enters seems to bring the pages of the book alive. The scenery also aids to the modernized feel and makes the film more relatable to people experiencing the work for the first time. The custom design is simple, with the notable exception of Ms. Dinsmoor, who Cuaron drapped in eccentric clothing and make up only fitting for her character.

Typically, Great Expectations is presented in Made-For-TV format and lacks any real mentionable talent. This version went the opposite way, and pulled in the big guns. With Ethan Hawke playing Finn, and Gwyneth Paltrow starring as Estella, the film has a star studded cast sure to grab the attention of Hollywood A-List fans. Robert Di Nero even appears in cameo as Arthur Lustig.

The soundtrack to the film is expertly orchestrated and includes songs from Tori Amos, the Grateful Dead, and Iggy Pop among others. The music is well placed in the film and never takes away from the plot or dialog.

Overall, this version is one of the best ever brought to film. From the star studed cast, to the enjoyable soundtrack, Curaon brings Dicken's novel back to life.
