1) Gift baskets.
There are hundreds of varieties of gift baskets. Some very popular baskets include spa baskets, food baskets, cooking baskets, and even wine lover's baskets. Spa baskets can be as simple as small at home luxuries like bubble bath or as expensive as a complete spa package at a local resort. A more personal take on a food basket is to pick your favorite recipe and include all the ingredients with the recipe in a neatly decorated basket for a friend or couple. This gift certainly takes the hassle out of deciding what to make for dinner.
2) Department store gift card.
Department stores carry everything from clothing and furniture to house wares and cosmetics. Everybody has something that the love to shop for and most department stores are going to have a little bit of everything for everyone. A department store gift card will allow the recipient to buy that item they've been meaning to get but haven't gotten around to actually going out and buying it.
3) Movies, cd's, and books.
These pretty much encompass the most popular forms of entertainment. Some people love to read and others just can't get enough of music. Still others love the thrill of the cinema. If you can't pick one book, cd, or movie, buy a few. A variety will ensure that at least one will interest your gift recipient. Mixing and matching these media can also be a good gift. If you really have a hard time deciding what to buy, get a gift card to Barnes and Noble.
4) Tickets.
Tickets to an event can be an excellent gift. Concert tickets are perhaps one of the most popular gifts. Keep in mind that tickets can be to any kind of concert, not just the latest Top 40 band. Tickets can be to a piano or violin concert or any kind of performer. You can buy tickets to see a comedian, an art gallery, a play, the opera, an academic lecture (or a lecture of any kind), or even a sporting event. Generally speaking, if you get tickets to a major sports game (football, hockey, baseball, soccer) for a sports loving guy... he'll be your biggest fan for quite a while.
Here's one last suggestion. Build your gift over the course of a year. For the people and events you know you will be giving gifts (birthdays, Christmas, etc.) start a box dedicated to gift items for that person and that event. So if a friend mentions that she loves a particular necklace while you're out shopping, you can get it for her that week for her birthday in three months. Gift giving doesn't have to be restricted to a couple weeks before the event. If you're always on the lookout for a good gift... gift giving can be very simple.
