1. Photo Shoot
Contact a local photographer, and arrange to pay for a photo shoot as a gift. Even if your friend or family member already has headshots, all actors can always benefit from having a wide variety of recent photos available for marketing themselves.
2. Commercial Acting Workshop
One of the best ways to break into acting is through commercials. In fact, Lindsay Lohan's career started out on a Jello commercial. Commercial Acting Workshops help you get the training and exposure that you need to land an agent and jobs. Many commercial acting workshops have an agents night the last night, where all of the participants are showcased to agents searching for new talent. They cost about $200+, which is why they make a great gift for a starving actor or actress hoping to make it big.
While I cannot specifically endorse any specific workshop, I have heard good things about the Tepper Gallegos Commercial Workshop. There is also one called, "Hey! I Saw Your Commercial!" that has a money-back guarantee of agent placement.
3. Subscription to Backstage Magazine
Backstage is essential for actors trying to make it in show biz. There are several different ways that you can subscribe, either to the print edition (which is available for both West and East Coast), or just to the online program. Whether you go for the online or print version, it contains tons of information on casting calls, which is greatly needed to help actors get jobs and exposure. Go to backstage.com to purchase a subscription.
4. Mini Tape Recorder
While all of the above gifts have been about helping actors get jobs, this gift is for the actor who already has jobs. Even if it's just community theatre, actors have their work cut out for them with memorizing lines. A mini tape recorder is great because actors can read their cue lines into the tape recorder, giving space for their lines. This helps them to run lines over and over again.
5. Classic Movies
Any good politician has studied the history of presidents and government leaders that have gone before them. In the same way, many great actors study the greats that have gone before them. Collections of classic movies are available on DVD nowadays, and most of them are fairly cheap.
