Heirlooms are genuine. One might even be given a Certificate of Authenticity if the owner allows it. With that said, they could be a great gift for the genealogist. When I was taking an Italian-American course, I was asked to give a presentation on my Italian-American background. Well, I didn't expect to receive an heirloom for my presentation, but I was given a handkerchief that my great-grandma Lucy was given at Ellis Island. I asked various family members about my ancestors and my uncle told me he kept a handkerchief which was noted as a souvenir for the immigrants who came into Ellis Island.
This may sound a little far-fetched to give a genealogist but if you have more than enough heirlooms laying around, go ahead and offer them as a gift. There's much history in these that a genealogist can appreciate. Not only could they be noted as a material to the genealogist, but this represents the struggle and symbolism the ancestor has encountered on his or her voyage to America.
Another great gift for the genealogist would be gift certificates to museums or any other historical place in town. Museums are cheap and they constitute the perfect gift for your genealogist friend or family member. Maybe even you can join them. Genealogists absolutely love sharing their information they find through their research. Plus it doesn't hurt to learn something new. It will also give the history buff new sources to learn from.
Visiting your local bookstore makes for a wonderful place to get the gift from as well. There are always new books out on the market waiting to be bought. Genealogists are not stupid people. They read up on oral interviews of the past, read timelines, etc. So offering them a book is not entirely out of the water!
With these great gift ideas for the genealogist, they'll be accepting your gift with a smile. If you want to wrap your gift up but want to add a different twist instead of simply buying typical wrapping paper, why not get a newspaper? Not just any newspaper, but one of the oldest newspapers you can find. You can find these at your local library if they are willing to offer you them.
