Great Granddaughter of Nelson Mandela Killed in Car Crash

The Second South African Fatal Road Crash in Two Days Claims Another Young Life

In a tragic start to the World Cup celebrations in South Africa, reports have come in that the great-granddaughter of Nelson Mandela has been killed in a car crash in South Africa, according to the BBC News .

Zanani, who had her 13th birthday on 9th June, was returning home from a concert in Soweto when the car she was being driven in came off a slip road, where the driver lost control, hit a barricade and the vehicle overturned.

According to the police, the driver of the vehicle, who has not yet been named, was found to be drunk, and has been arrested under drink-driving charges. He may also be facing homicide charges as a result.

This is the second fatal crash in South Africa in 2 days, with a bus carrying English students having crashed only the day before, killing 3 students.

Nelson Mandela, who is 91, will unfortunately not now be attending the World Cup opening ceremony, as according to the Nelson Mandela Foundation, this tragedy makes it inappropriate.

Many celebrities from around the world, including Hugh Masekela, Shakira, Alicia Keys and the Black Eyed Peas, will be at the opening ceremony today to celebrate the first World Cup to take place in Africa, an event which has sadly already been marked by several tragedies.

No one should get in a car with a drunk driver. It's so sad that she was only 13.
