There are many different things that can spice up that grilled cheese sandwich, and you probably have a lot of in cabinets and cupboards around the house already. A sprinkle of garlic salt can turn that plain grilled cheese sandwich into a gourmet garlic grilled cheese, and some rosemary or thyme can really liven up a boring old sandwich, too.
Different types of cheese can be used, too - there's no reason to stick with your everyday Kraft cheese singles. Instead, shop around in your local market and browse their cheese selection. Pepper jack, Swiss and Mozzarella all make for great grilled cheese sandwiches, and there's a lot of other varieties you can try as well. You may even want to try a two, three, or even four cheese sandwich!
The different kind of bread used for your grilled cheese sandwich can really make a difference, too. While white bread is typically used, there are any number of different breads you can use including wheat, rye and more. If you prefer, you can even use a tortilla or pita bread and make a grilled cheese wrap.
Some items can be added into your grilled cheese sandwich to give it that extra bite, too. Bacon bits or strips of cooked bacon go well on a grilled cheese sandwich, as do tomatoes, onions and ham. If you like your food spicy, try sprinkling some hot sauce on the cheese or putting a pepper or two inside your sandwich.
You may also be looking for side dishes that go well with grilled cheese sandwiches, too. Tomato soup is a classic, but it's not for everyone. Chicken noodle soup and grilled cheese sandwiches go great together. Beef stew, wild rice, ramen noodles, salad, and French fries all make a great addition to a grilled cheese sandwich too.
But the ideas above still don't make for a full meal. If you like to eat your grilled cheese sandwiches around dinner time, you might want to try it with a plate of spaghetti, lasagna, or even a steak or some freshly cooked fish. Grilled cheese sandwiches are such a versatile snack, they can be paired up with nearly any dish, and work great for any meal of the day as well as for any occasion that may arise.
