Country Choices
1) Blake Skelton: The Baby. This song would be appropriate if the groom is the baby in the family. The song references the youngest male child.
2) Dixie Chicks: Godspeed. This song is sort of a prayer of a mother for her son. It has very sweet lyrics, part of which say , " Dragon tales and the "water is wide" pirate's sail and lost boys fly. "
3) Willie Nelson: Mama, Don't Let Your Baby;s Grow Up to Be Cowboys. For the life of me, I can't imagine using this song in a wedding. We thought of starting our dance with this, then saying, " Just joking." In addition, it would be rather difficult to dance too.
4) Rascel Flatts: My Wish. This song is basically a wish from any mother to her son as he grows up.
5) Aaron Lines: 20 Years Late. This one is from the son's perspective as he calls his Mom up, finally to thank her for all she has done for him.
Rock and Pop
1) Barry Manilow: You are My Child: I felt this song was a bit corny, but it is from a child's or grown adult child's point of view stating he is "your hope, your chance, your child." I envision the mother-son dance being more from the Mom's point of view rather than the child's.
2) Beatles: In My Life: This is from the perspective of a son looking over his life, friends and lovers. I did not see much in this song related to a mother-son relationship.
3) Shinedown: Simple Man; While this is listed as rock, it has a slight country edge to it. For those who haven't heard this song, it is a son looking back on what his Mother told him would make him a success in life. This might be our song! Only problem is, it is for an only son and I have two. Maybe we could change the beginning to " my oldest son" Rather than " my only son."
4) Bee Gees: First of May. This song is difficult to interpret. It seems to be any two people who have grown up together, but could be a mother-son. The lyrics mention a tree that has grown and a Christmas tree that is now not so tall. Seems to reference growing up.
5) Stevie Wonder: You are the Sunshine of my Life. The line, " you must have known that I was lonely. " seems to reference a love relationship. However a friend of mine used this in her son's wedding, and it worked well. Plus everyone knows it.
Jazz or Adult Alternative Choices
1) Unforgettable: Nat King Cole. The lyrics are simple and could fit any relationship. I think this is a good choice for a slow dance.
2) Bette Midler: Baby Mine. This song is a mother speaking to her young song.
3) Molly Pasutti: I'm Blessed to Call you Mother. This is a unique song, that would be great for a nontraditional mother-son dance. If the groom has a step mom or two mother figures in his life, this is a great choice.
4) Frank Sinatra: Summer Wind. This is a sad song which states, " I lost you to the summer wind. " Every mother would cry dancing to this one.
5) Al Jolsen: Sonny Boy. This is such an old song. It mentions Sonny Boy. Who is Sonny Boy? But it is listed as a mother-son song.
The last word of advise is to make sure the song is a good fit for the type of wedding. Also, check with the bride. The ultimate choice of the song should be between the bride and the groom. After all, it is their wedding.
