Halloween costumes for families can be a lot of fun, and a great way for any clan to spend quality time together. Making Halloween costumes with the people you love the most, and wearing them out together as a group on the big holiday will put everyone in your household in the holiday spirit. There are a few key elements that make for successful Halloween costumes for families. You'll need a group Halloween costume idea that allows for a range of ages so that nobody is embarrassed by a costume that is too childish or too mature. You'll need a group Halloween costume idea that accommodates varying levels of involvement from different members of the family. That way, some of you can go hog-wild making elaborate costumes while others just grab a wig and go straight to the fun. Read on for some great Halloween costumes for families that fit these categories, and will help make your holiday a scream.

Go As A Rock Band
Everyone has a secret rock star inside them, and families are no different from anyone else. You can make Halloween costumes that mimic a specific band that you all like, such as the Beatles, or you can all go wild creating an original rock star alter egos. This is one of the most successful last minute Halloween costumes for families: just pass out cardboard instruments, dole out lots of eyeliner and hairspray, and have everybody raid their closets for the wildest garments in the house.

Go As A Family
Some of the best Halloween costumes for families consist of going as another family! For something fun and lighthearted, take a cue from the world of cartoons and go as the Flintstones, the Jetsons, or the Simpsons. For Halloween costumes that are a little bit spookier, try the Munsters or the Addams Family. If you really want to terrify other families with your Halloween costumes, go as the Nixons, or even the Osbornes.

Go As A Movie
Coming up with Halloween costumes for families lets you pull off big bold gestures that a single Halloween reveler could never get across. For example, one young woman dressed up as Alice from Alice In Wonderland will just look like a girl in a party dress, but with the rest of the family decked out as the Queen of Hearts, the White Rabbit, etc., the idea will come across right away. Families who have a favorite movie can really have a blast coming up with Halloween costumes as the different characters, and joining forces to go as the principal players in a movie is a great way to make a splash. Some of the best Halloween costumes for families going as a movie can be found in hits like Star Wars, The Wizard Of Oz, The Lord Of The Rings, or, for the truly ambitious, try Wallace And Gromit's Curse Of The Were-Rabbit.

Go As Co-Workers
From doctors living an emotional roller coaster in the E.R. to office drones in neighboring cubicles, the possible Halloween costume themes for families who go as co-workers are endless. These options are some of the best Halloween Costumes for families where there is one (or two) shy adults. Some grownups feel a little bit self-conscious getting decked out for Halloween, but if you're dressing up in something that other adults wear every day, there's a lot less room for embarrassment than there would be if you were dressed up as a giant panda, or some other, more whimsical, Halloween costumes. Plus, kids love dressing up as firefighters, policemen, or other authority figures, so the whole family will be happy with this one.

  • For a last minute costume, try going as a rock band: all you need are cardboard instruments!
  • For something a bit more elaborate, try a famous family, or the principal cast of a favorite film.
  • If there's a shy adult in the party, try going as a group of professionals like firefighters.
Halloween originated as the Celtic holiday Samhain, which was celebrated thousands of years ago.

I really like the idea of dressing as the family from a TV series or movie. Apparrently that's going around a lot this year - I saw this pic of Regis and Kelly as a promo for their Oct. 29 Halloween show dressed as the Pritchett's from Modern Family.

    Cute pic if you're interested...
