Great Handmade Gift Ideas for the Mom Who Has Everything!

And the Shopper Who Has Nothing

We've all been there......searching the isles of countless department stores for that special something. I know from my
own experience that a lot of mothers are difficult to shop for. If your mom doesn't collect something, or have a hobby, it can seem like the choices for gifts are very limited. It may seem like every year, you are getting the same old gifts for mom, but it doesn't have to be that way.

It almost seems universal that all moms like certain things; candles, potpourri, flowers, family portraits, small things to make the house look pretty... but it doesn't mean that it has to be boring (or expensive).

Anyone with a little money can go to the store and buy a holiday present for their mother at the last moment. This year, try making a list early and being creative. Remember when you were little, and all of your holiday gifts were hand made? Your mom didn't just pretend to like that stuff. No matter what age the son or daughter, a mother will truly appreciate something that required thought (and not just a credit card). If you insist on spending a lot of money, then go about your regular shopping; but I strongly recommend one of these home-made and heartfelt holiday ideas this year. You can thank me later!

* Handmade candles- Getting a candle kit is as easy as going to your local craft store, and you can customize every one the way you want. Not only will these candles be beautiful and cherished, but it is a fun family activity too. You can find multiple links for supplies at http://Candle-making.Kits.AlltheBrands.com. Keep in mind that dried flowers or ribbons add a great touch to candles.

* Paint a picture- If you are a good artist, you can pick a favorite family photo to recreate. If you are more of a beginner, using water colors to create a gorgeous winter scene is a cinch. Basic paints are inexpensive, and only the connoisseur will notice the difference, so go cheap! For picture ideas, I suggest using a Yahoo image search. Use a keyword such as "winter" or "snowman" to instantly find hordes of picture ideas. If you seem to have trouble with art, find a friend who can help you. Even the art teacher at one of the local schools could probably give you some tips. (Or even better, let you borrow paints).

* Make a cement stepping stone- These kits are becoming more and more popular, so it is easy to find them at Walmart, Target or any store in your area. Making the stones is very fun, and can involve the kids in the family too. There are many different designs available, and anyone can make a perfect stone using the templates that come with most kits. Also, you can purchase additional stained glass pieces to get colorful and creative. This piece of art will last indefinitely, and can be displayed in or outdoors.

* Write a poem- Get a nice piece of stationary or a pretty sheet of handmade paper. The rest is up to you. This project can be as simple or as elaborate as you make it. You don't have to be a great poet to say something from the heart that is meaningful.

* Organize a recipe book- Try to track down some old family favorites or some new meal ideas for the mom who loves to cook. There are many places online to find recipes, including www.foodnetwork.com. Or perhaps, find out what your mother's very favorite meal is, and cook it for her. Everyone loves food, and it will mean a lot to her knowing you put thought into this gift.

If you get stumped, take a trip to a craft store. Pick out just one or two things that catch your eye, and then give yourself time to get inspired! There is no wrong way to create something. Get the whole family involved and enjoy what you are doing.

Really, there are thousands of gifts that can be handmade. The beauty of making something on your own is the guarantee that it is one of a kind. No matter what you make, your mother will not already have it. In fact, the idea of hand making something is ideal for almost any person. Everyone appreciates something from the heart. No matter what your mother is into, she will be filled with emotion when you give her a special handmade gift.

  • You don't have to spend a lot of money to get a unique and beautiful gift.
  • If you feel creatively challenged, spend extra time wrapping gifts to make them personalized.
  • Use strips of old cloth, dried flowers, buttons, or feathers for added decoration. Anything goes!
Time spent on making a present is worth more than money spent!

Thanks! I appreciate the comment. The tree sounds like such a good idea; and a great way to get the family together. I know my family loves to gather around the tree and admire all the ornaments we have made over the years, especially the ones from when we were children. It brings laughter and joy to us each year! Thanks again for the comment! Merry Christmas!!!

Great idea Lonnie. We've been making homemade gifts and ornaments for years. We decorate a special tree that has nothing on it but homemade ornaments.
