Great Holiday Gifts for Less

Elizabeth McKeever
Due to the economic turbulence of the past year, many of us might be in search of holiday bargains. Luckily there are also many unique gifts available to suit any budget. First you should decide what the budget for your holiday shopping will be. If you begin your holiday shopping early you'll be able to most take advantage of available sales and greater selection. Also check to see if your recipient has an Amazon wish list. It can help you determine what they might like, and often people list items that are under twenty or even under ten dollars.

Take stock of any skills or talents you have that could be used to make a gift. For people who have a green thumb, root and grow clippings from some of your own plants. Rosemary works great for this because it roots easily and small plants of it can be kept in the recipient's kitchen to provide fresh seasoning for food year round. If you are better with fabric or yarn, a homemade scarf or drink coasters might be better.

Other things to make that are sure to be appreciated are gifts of food. Fudge, cookies, quick breads and chex mix are all popular choices. You might even make a seed ball for birds that could be hung outside a window... a food item that would provide enjoyment, but no additional holiday calories.

I always enjoy creating hand-painted ornaments for friends and family. Last year I used glass balls that I painted with acrylic craft paint and sealed with a glossy top coat. I've also painted wine corks and other found items to reduce the supply cost.

If you feel you have no special talents to share, then consider a gift of service. Good friends with children would likely love a certificate for an evening of free babysitting provided by you. Once my husband washed my car as a gift. I've painted rooms for family and friends as a special service. Just give some thought to what you might be able to do for others more easily that they can do for themselves. Be sure to put it in writing so that the offer is concrete and tangible. Plus it still gives them something to unwrap.

If you'd like to gift someone with a handmade item but the time constraints are too pressing, then check out etsy.com. Or consider making a charitable donation in honor of your giftee. Magazine subscriptions are another great bargain. Though your budget might be smaller this year, many retailers have lowered prices to entice business, so don't forget to comparison shop at some of your favorite stores. With a bit of planning, your sure to have a more budget friendly, meaningful and hassle free holiday.
