Great Holiday Gifts for Movie Lovers

Jennifer Claerr
Finding a great holiday gift for the movie lover in your life is easy. You don't even need to buy him a movie, although you can if you know what he wants. If you do plan to buy your favorite movie buff a DVD or Blu-ray disc, be sure to drop hints or ask for a list. Otherwise, there are plenty of other movie-themed gifts you can buy.

Movie Gift Baskets

You can make an easy movie night gift basket by getting some of your recipient's favorite DVDs or Blu-ray discs, some microwave popcorn, nuts, chips, pretzels and movie candy. If you want to make a cheap movie basket, you can include carefully selected used DVDs or Blu-ray discs. However, check the disc carefully for scratches and make sure the movie has a case in like new condition before you buy your holiday gift. Place all your movie gifts inside a wicker basket and decorate it with a bow made from movie-reel ribbon.

Movie Gift Certificates

Gift certificates or cards to movie rental companies like Blockbuster or Netflix make excellent holiday gifts for movie lovers. Netflix gift subscriptions are available for as little as one month and as much as one year. Blockbuster's gift cards come in $10, $25 and $50 amounts. You can also get movie theater ticket gift certificates from major movie companies like AMC, Fandango, Regal and Cinemark.

DVD and Blu-ray Players

If your movie lover friend or family member is still watching his movies on VHS, you could spring for an upgrade. There are many high quality DVD players available today for cheap. You'll probably pay more for a Blu-ray player, but it will have more features and HD capabilities that will be well worth the price. If your movie buff recipient has a high speed Internet connection and a wireless home network, get a Blu-ray player with wireless networking capability and Internet applications built in. Check the features of the Blu-ray player to ensure that it will work with your recipient's existing services, such as Netflix or Blockbuster instant streaming movies, Amazon Video on Demand or Vudu. Make sure to read reviews of the DVD or Blu-ray player on a site such as Amazon.com or CNET before you make your purchase. It will save your recipient a lot of trouble over the long term, as many DVD and Blu-ray players die before they're even a year or two old.

Digital Video Players

Digital video players make excellent holiday gifts for the movie lover who likes to get his entertainment over the Internet through a wired or wireless network. One of the best and the cheapest is the Roku Digital Video Player, which supports Netflix, Amazon Video on Demand, Hulu Plus and Pandora Radio. The Logitech Revue supports Google TV, which integrates with existing cable or satellite TV service, has its own Chrome-based web browser and a media player that will play movies from a computer and supports Netflix streaming movies.
