Great Horror Movies You Need to See, Part I

Digging for Great Horror in the 21st Century

Mike McQuillian
Great horror movies are hard to find these days. With viewers desensitized to even the most horrific violence, and studios depending upon CGI for all of their scares, the horror movie landscape can look pretty bleak. There are, however, some great horror movies being made. It just takes a little bit of digging to find them.

Pontypool (2008)

Pontypool is by far the best zombie film I have seen in years. Set in Pontypool, a small town in Canada, the entire film takes place inside a radio station. Stephen McHattie plays a DJ who has been exiled to Pontypool after losing his big city job. Calls are coming in to the station. People are acting strangely, even killing each other. The intense suspense and unique resolution make Pontypool a great horror movie.

House of the Devil (2009)

House of the Devil cements Ti West as a director of great horror movies. Set in the early 80s, the film revolves around Samantha, a college girl that wants her own apartment to get away from her slob of a roommate. Taking a babysitting job to make some money, Samantha goes into the country for the job. When she arrives, she is told that there is no child, but the owners will pay her double to stay for the night. What follows is terror at a slow burn, slowly building to a shocking ending.

Wolf Creek (2005)

Wolf Creek, based loosely on the Backpacker Murders in 1990s Australia, is a disturbing fake-out of a film. Watching the first half hour, one might think it is simply a road movie about Australian college kids going camping. Bit when they arrive at Wolf Creek and their car breaks down, everything changes. "Help" arrives in the form of a local man with a truck. But what he does is far from helpful. Warning: While this is a great horror movie, it is extremely graphic.

Trick 'r Treat

Trick 'r Treat brings the comic book fun back into horror movies. It's Halloween night in a small town, and everyone's out trick or treating or partying. But not everything is as it should be. The school principal wants more than candy. The legend of a bus of schoolchildren that were killed seems all too real. And a little boy that won't speak seems a bit too at home with these strange happenings. A truly great horror movie, Trick 'r Treat offers up all the chills and humor a good Halloween night should.

Splinter

Splinter revives the idea that truly original monster movies are still possible. A couple and the man holding them hostage are trapped in a convenience store. Not by the police, but by a strange creature that feeds on blood. The creature can splinter into many fully-working pieces. This great horror movie is stunningly original, while staying true to the horror films from the past.

This list will get you started with some great horror movies. Look for Part II, coming soon!
