Great Inventions Courtesy of the United States Government

You Can Thank the United States National Science Foundation for Inventing the Internet!

Rebecca Said
Relatively speaking, the United States has not been around for a long period of time. When you take a look at what we have invented and brought to the world it is incredible. We have invented indoor light, artificial hearts, computers, the internet, air conditioning, refrigerators, telephones, telegraphs, airplanes, anesthesia, burglar alarms, hearing aids, vaccines for incurable diseases and so much more. American inventions have brought us out of the stone age.

Great inventions courtesy of the United States #1: Artificial Heart

Dr. Robert K. Jarvik invented the artificial heart in the late 1970's.

Great inventions courtesy of the United States #2: Light Bulb

Thomas Edison invented the light bulb in 1880. It really makes the mind boggle, how did the world get by without light bulbs?

Great inventions courtesy of the United States #3: Computers

In 1964 IBM invented the first operating system. In 1965 Digital equipment invented the first mini-computer. Altair computer was invented in 1975.

Great inventions courtesy of the United States #4: Box Telephones

Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone in 1876. Many people of that time were astonished. I doubt if Bell even completely understood how he would change the world.

Great inventions courtesy of the United States #5: Sewing Machine

Isaac Merritt Singer and Elias Howe invented the sewing machine around 1853. Howe actually invented it but singer improved upon it. Interestingly, Singer took all the credit for inventing the sewing machine. Elias Howe sued singer for patent infringement.

Great inventions courtesy of the United States #6: Telegraph

The telegraph was invented by Samuel Morse in 1849. It would record dots and dashes referred to as morse code.

Great inventions courtesy of the United States #7: Airplanes

Wilbur and Orville Wright invented the airplane in 1903. It was the first real airplane that could safely move left, right, up and down.

Great inventions courtesy of the United States #8: Internet

United States' National Science Foundation invented the internet in 1983. Personally, I cannot even imagine life without the internet. It has brought the whole world closer by sharing ideas and information between us. With the internet I can find out about anything I am interested in and talk to people from all around the world.

Great inventions courtesy of the United States #9: Vaccine for cervical cancer

University of Louisville invented the vaccine for cervical cancer in 2006. This is incredible because it is the first vaccine ever for cancer.

Great inventions courtesy of the United States #10: Polio Vaccine

Dr. Jonas Salk invents a vaccine for polio in 1957.

Shirley you jest (and don't call me surly anymore)! I'd be most interested in learning exactly how the United States guberment invented anything ... besides the invention of political double speak and the art of peeing on the citizens leg and telling them its raining outside ...

Money? .. our guberment doesn't have any money they take the citizen's money and more of it than they should and besides that Al Gore invented the internet .. I know this for a fact .. he told me so. If Al Gore says that global warming is real ... you can take that to the bank ... well he will take it to the bank, the Global Warming Scam is worth several billion dollars each year to those who own the Chicago Exchange .. Oh .. you didn't know that it involved money .. reallly?

The American Government invented these things???
I do believe that you lack understanding of how the Free Market works.
A person has an idea, he works on it, finds investors, seldom the Government, to help him with his project, as Edison did a number of times, and works on it some more. After a time the idea reaches the market and he (And his investors) eithers makes a boat load of money or walks away with empty pockets.
The only inventions that can be attibuted to the Government would be Military ones, and even those started with an idea that someone (Likely a contractor) came up with to solve a problem and not a Government Official. I have known a few contractors who worked on things from Military to NASA who have explained a few things to me about their work.
The Government only consumes, it does not invest, it does not create, it does not do anything but consumes and grows.
Bill Gates would not be able to do what he did if he were to try it today with all the Government Regs a

This is BS. Most of the things on those list weren't invented by America. Why don't y'all make yourself useful and go google this crap on the "internet" before posting it?

  • Canadian Girl4/13/2011

I am surprised to see how many of the things on that list were NOT invented by Americans. Why don't you use one the inventions you claim to have invent (the internet) before making an article of it?

The government did however provide funds for some of these innovative minds to function. If there was a complete lack of government some discoveries would have appeared much later or not at all. Some inventions and discoveries are just pieces that lead to greater discoveries. Government and private companies have done both.

Don't forget the French. Where would we be without the chauffeur or bagel? Not to mention the white flag, the international symbol of surrender.
On second thought, go ahead and forget the French.

What does the US government have to do with most of these? Off the top of my head, most of these inventions were by individuals without government assistance. The Wright brothers flew first; Curtis Langley, with the help of the US government never flew.

Interesting that cervical cancer vaccine was invented by an Australian at University of Queensland and received nobel prize for his work. The Louisville vaccination is simply a project to reduce costs of the successful vaccine. First computer is debatable as being from germany or britain. Alexander b
Bell simply recorded a patent in the US for the telephone and spent most of education and time developing device in scotland and later canada. Was a professor at Boston for a while but simply because of family health problems forcing them to move to Canada. I agree one of the basic problems with the states is they are clueless about the rest of the world. When you hear guys from the states talking about their friends from Canadia and not comprehending good natured banter between other diverse cultures you have to think possibly some world news on television newspapers and school could only help
