The Sykora Bakery located in the Czech Village on the South West side of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. A landmark in the Czech Village, the bakery remains a favorite among locals. Even the historic flood of June 2008 could not keep the bakery closed. The bakery reopened in April 2009 to serve their famous Bohemian rye bread and kolaches to their customers.

The Sykora Bakery combines authentic Czech-inspired recipes with the quaint charm of yesteryear. The must-have item on the menu is their kolach. A kolach is a pastry filled with a variety of fruits or cheeses. The bakery typically has a large variety of kolaches on hand including pear, cherry, poppy seed and apple. This flavorful treat even has a June festival named after them, Kolach Festival held in Cedar Rapids at the St. Ludimila Church.

The Sykora Bakery has a bright and cheery interior with several small tables to sit at. The full service bakery is open daily and serves a great variety of Czech pastries, baked cinnamon roll as well as a full menu of espresso beverages. They also feature daily espresso specials ranging from triple chocolate mocha to a raspberry vanilla swirl latte.

For lunch, patrons can enjoy a full menu of build-your-own deli sandwiches. Sandwich choices include roast beef, smoked turkey, capicollo, hard salami, pastrami, smoked ham, prosciutto and corned beef. A variety of breads all freshly baked are available to satisfy any appetite as well as a complete array of condiments, including sauerkraut, to make deli sandwich you won't soon forget.

The Sykora Bakery also serves a full menu of pizza for dine in or carry out. Diners can choose to build their own or choose one of the special pizzas on the menu such as Bohemian Hawaiian, taco or a B.L.T. No matter what you order, you're sure to leave satisfied with the friendly service, quaint ambiance and great tasting food. For dessert, ice cream or cookies are a great choice.

History or the Czech Village

After dining at the Sykora Bakery, be sure to take time to stroll through the Czech Village. The history of the Czech Village dates back to the mid-1800s when the first Bohemians arrived in Cedar Rapids. The group occupied the 16th Avenue Czech Village area beginning in 1900.

Many of the businesses were inspired by this group of immigrants. Today, the rich Czech heritage remains in the area as they work to rebuild the area impacted by the historic Flood of June 2008. The National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library was featured in much of the flood coverage as the flood waters invaded this beautiful museum.

Since the Flood of June 2008 several Czech Village businesses have returned and are working to rebuild this historic area of the city of Cedar Rapids.
